PART A Sim all. In this first part I ran everything with simulation. Just an Ubuntu laptop, no camera, nothing else. This was quite complicated, but is explained step-by-step in this wiki.
I did the examples in a Youtube demo series (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLy9nLDKxDN683GqAiJ4IVLquYBod_2oA6) that was the only start-to-finish step-by-step demo I could find.
However, the Youtube series was 4 years old, parts outdated, a bit chaotic, and not numbered (there are over 100 install/config steps for the first 11 (of 23) videos, and the author did not number them; what is wrong with using numbers in documentation?). Also, versions are critical, and this video series magically switched ROS versions in the middle of the process (the author did not do things himself step-by-step). The Git docs and the video also often did not match, and it was not clear which to use.
It took me a few weeks, but somehow got it running. My doc is still a big rough, but all steps and numbered and its reproducible. A major effort.
