I am currently self-studying Hebrew (I speak/read Chinese, Russian, Ukrainian, and German). Every language requires a unique approach depending on

  • whether or not you have contact with native speakers and
  • available technology (translation tools, text-to-speech, etc).

This page describes how my method for studying Hebrew while living in the rural Midwest. My MP4 files for study are on my Gdrive.

My study method

Until recently I'd look at the daily news on this site for inspiration, but then it went dark.

I use context.reverso.net as my online dictionary.

Bing.com is my text-to-speech tool.

  • Separate words are spoken with a pause between each word.
  • Complete sentences are spoken at full speed.

I usually create about 10 Bing tabs of demo sentences. I then record them all to an mp4 using a freeware version of Active Presenter.

I do this once a day. A copy of the MP4 files are on my Gdrive.

I study MP4s at home, in my car, and in the park. I use MPC player for playback.

  • The space key is pause/play. That makes it easy to pause/play so that my mind can catch up.
  • Auto-replay.

At home I usually play a video of travelling by car in the Tibetan/China mountains (with no sound, no subtitles) in one brower window while watching/listening to my Hebrew MP4s in another. With this setup, I can concentrate easily for an hour without getting tired or distracted.

Who needs Mars when you have landscapes like this on Earth.
