Dante Dettamanti was head water polo coach for the Stanford Cardinals for 25 years.
In 1994 he took over the 3/4 acre Rose vineyard on Skyland Road. The property was formerly the Militak Ranch and the owners ad planted Chardonnay vines on their own rootstock sometime in the late 70's or early 80's. The first harvest was 1995 and the wine was produced by DeVine Consulting. In 1997 he planted a half acre of Pommard clone Pinot Noir, followed in 2005 by a little over an acre of Dijon Clones Pinot Noir. The first Pinot vintage was 2000.
In 1996 he took over the 2 1/2 acre Klein Vineyard on Tollgate Rd in Saratoga. The vineyard is a field blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with some Cab ernet Franc and Merlot. Dettamanti Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon was produced in 1997 and 1999, but not 1998 when the crop was eaten by wild deer (a common hazard in the mountains). The vineyards are now used by Mount Eden.
Since 2003 the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes have been used by Salamandre Wine Cellarsand sold as single vineyard wines under the Salamandre label. Following the 2007 harvest the vineyards will be taken over by Sagebrush Winery.
