Dr. Wells Shoemaker, a pediatrician, first became interested in wine when visiting Italy aged 19. Made amateur wine as small group of doctors for seven years starting in late 1970s before officially opening winery in 1985.
For over 40 years as bonded winery #800 (out of nearly 5,000 in US today), Salamandre Wine Cellars quietly turned out wines of character from pristine location in old growth redwoods outside Aptos village.
July 2024: Wells Shoemaker and wife Sandie, along with business partners Dave and Mary South, announced closure and retirement.
Small lot production using hand-selected grapes. Tucked into shaded redwood canyon.
