Oakwood - nnichael/MOGL GitHub Wiki

Oakwood wasn't always the destitute, downtrodden place that is it now; Once it was the beacon of hope for Springfield. All that remains now is wanton ruin and shattered glass, crushed by the weight of broken dreams and the visions of what could have been....

As the population of Springfield grew, so did it's needs. In response to the ever growing amount of people, it was to be decided that a new district to hold these new arrivals would be built around a giant Oakwood tree; The Tree being a symbol for not only the cities current growth, but also its potential. Oakwood was to be a powerhouse unlike what was ever seen before, a place of industry and infrastructure which would not only provide export and support for Springfield at large, but had the potential to be wholly self-sufficient should the need arise.

The ambition of the project was immense, shadowed only by the cost. this is where The Nuggets Corporation comes into play. Donating vast amounts of funding and equipment using the guise of charity under the leadership of Sinclair Nuggets; a descendant of the eponymous Walter Nuggets had ulterior motives in his actions.

After constructions of basic living areas were completed, work immediately began on the building of factories. The working conditions were akin to slavery, but the workers were fine as the pay was good and the rent nonexistent. Complaints of feeling as though they were being watched in their homes as well as odd noises being heard in the streets outside windows began to float around. Not a thought was given until the disappearances began.

Workers would go on a lunch break and not come back, some would be declared missing after not being seen leaving homes by neighbors; but eventually, people would always come back weeks later not knowing what had happened to them. The only thing that they could remember was an intense pain, a pain which some still feel to this day. Soon, the disappearances would last longer, with the victims being more and more debilitated by pain each time; eventually, people stopped returning all together.

The Vagrants, being made up of those already homeless who had taken up Oakwood as their "spot" before construction began, were convinced that Aliens were responsible; as they would frequently see flashes of green light, and then find the dazed missing workers nearby. The more psychologically damaged Workers, in an attempt to stave off insanity, latched on to the Alien Conspiracy and eventually lost themselves and their homes, becoming Hobos.

It was not Aliens doing this to the people, but rather The Nuggets Corporation committing cruel experiments on them, turning them into Mutants in an effort to require slave labor for the mines, and deep level security. It was one of these Mutants that changed the fate of Oakwood. After escaping its transport, the Mutant; in its shattered mindset, wanting to return home, made its way slowly back to Oakwood. After miraculously reaching Oakwood without incident in the cover of night, it took rest under the mighty tree.

As day broke, so did the District.

The first people to see the Mutant were appalled and attacked the creature, causing it to rampage and kill its attackers. Eventually the Nuggets Corporation came in and capture it before too much damage could be done. The effects of this rampage, unfortunate for Nuggets, had done its damage already however.

The stress of the working conditions coupled with the social unrest caused many to leave the district. those that remained either Gangs that had formed; fighting for scraps and territory, The Charitable; those who are in a much better situation, being charitable by proving food pantries and kitchens, and scraping by to give medical attention, or were Vagrants: too crazed and damaged to understand their situation, with a deep obsession on the cause of their plight.
