Getting started - neuralinterfacinglab/LabManual GitHub Wiki
Welcome, we're really happy to have you!
First things first
We tried our best getting the essentials in this getting started page, but even the best guides will leave more questions. If you are unsure, ask your collegues! We have gone through the same stuff and are always happy to help!
Many divisions, schools, faculties and departments will be mentioned throughout this wiki. You may familiarize and reference our organizational page to get the basics down.
Matters to arrange:
Contact Rachelle Capponi (e-mail: secr-neuroscience at maastrichtuniversity.nl), the secretary of Division III, for:
- Employee card (get and fill in application form)
- Desk
- Office key
- Mailing lists
- Access to some Umployee groups
Discuss with your supervisors and ICT for:
- Laptop

Other To-Dos

This password is relevant for signing into your work laptop, email adress, WIFI and other UM portals.

Software and services
- Slack → This is our main and preferred way to communicate. Make sure you have access to slack as soon as possible.
- Umployee → Umployee is the Universities main source of information. You find all sorts of information under practical information, and join groups that are relevant for you. Those may be: MHeNs and DIV III (ask Rachelle for access).
- Successfactors → Find and manage all your contract matters here. You can also submit leave hours here.
- MyUm → You can request reimbursements here. This was the system before successfactors, and will be phased out in the future.
- ICT self-service portal → All your ICT needs can be found here. Everything from software licences (Zoom, Office, Matlab), to all needs for your workspace (e-mail, wifi access, working from home, VPN, Surfdrive and printing). It also includes e-mails, telephone and roomnumbers for FHML ICT support.
- Zoom → Maastricht University has a university-wide Zoom licence, and all the university meetings will be on zoom. Check out the ICT self-service to get started
Working in the Neural Interfacing lab
Meetings
First and foremost, we try to reduce the amount of meetings to a minimum, but sometimes meetings are necessary.
For the most recent meeting information please refer to #lab-meetings Slack channel.
Weekly lab meeting
The weekly is our main and regular group meeting, usually at Friday 11:30. During these weekly meetings, we each present one slide on our progress and goals. Ideally, your slide sparks some discussion. We encourage you to use any kind of visuals. Are you running some analysis? Did you make a new plot? Or did something not work? We're you delayed? Anything on your mind may be added to your slide. If you have something bigger, there is time available at the end of the meeting for more comprehensive presentation.
Supervision
This is a one-on-one meeting with your supervisor. It is strongly recommended to have set-up a regular meeting.

Visibility
Visibility is important, so make sure people can find you! Fill in your profile on Umployee and the MHeNs website. You may also consider social media accounts to increase visibility.
Finally
Once you've been with us for a couple of months, try to fill out this questionnaire and discuss it with your supervisor.
