Flip Flop
A flip flop is a type of digital circuit that can store one bit of information, which is either a 0 or a 1. It is a fundamental building block of sequential logic circuits and is commonly used in electronic devices such as computers, calculators, and digital clocks.
Why Flip Flops if we have Latches?
| Feature | Flip Flop | Latch |
|---|---|---|
Triggering |
Edge-triggered | Level-triggered |
Stability |
More stable, output changes only on clock edge | Less stable, output changes as soon as inputs change |
Storage |
Can store one bit of information | Can store one bit of information |
Applications |
Used in Counters, shift registers and memory elements | Control and storage of small amounts of digital information in simple logic circuits |
