Commentary: This poem is not about “play” as diversion but about 游心 – a mind that is no longer entangled. The opening line sets the tone of not breaking barriers but simply not being bound by them. The second line reflects the natural arising and passing of thoughts; no suppression nor extension. “水到渠成非我力，云行空际本无闲” expresses a shift away from agency. Things unfold but not because “I” am driving them. Even movement (云行) is not busyness; it is just what is happening. The fifth and sixth lines clarify a point that is easy to misunderstand. I am not rejecting action or systems (有为暂借诸般用) but they are borrowed tools rather than possessions. What remains constant is 无住, non-abiding and yet not detached in a cold sense, rather settled in immediacy. The last couplet avoids conclusion. There is no “attainment” to point to. Whatever arises, returns. “归山” is not a place but a gesture—return without residue. Overall, this is not a philosophy of withdrawal but of non-accumulation. Things are used, experienced, understood—but not carried forward unnecessarily. That is 游戏 to me.
