Border collies were added in Working Dogs 1.0.

Border collies are the model base for medium breed dogs.

Gameplay information

Border collies are a medium herding-group dog. When in working mode, they assist players by attracting passive livestock mobs. They can be further instructed on where to move using the Come and Go Here commands, helping players move large groups or skittish livestock without getting close to them.

They are obtained by trading with Journeyman+ Farmer villagers. A border collie spawn egg costs 32 emeralds. They are also occasionally obtainable at shelters.

Border collies have a base health of 5 hearts (10 points), with a bite damage of 1.5 hearts (3 points.) Border collies have a moderate movement speed, which can vary per dog.

They are able to equip all general dog items: all border collies can wear the collar, harness and muzzle. Working border collies can be further protected with a hog vest and a service vest. If equipped with saddlebags, a border collie can carry 15 stacks of items.

Border collies come in both long and short coat varieties. Long coated border collies are cold weather dogs, while short coated dogs are temperate weather dogs. Long coated border collies get a significant debuff to their health, speed and bite damage in hot climates, while short coated border collies get a debuff in extremely hot or cold climates.

Border collies are amicable with other dogs, pets and livestock, as well as players. They are not prone to aggression and can safely be kept with other friendly dogs. However, if attacked, border collies will defend themselves.

Breed information

The black-and-white border collie is an iconic dog. They’re known for their eager working spirit, their easy trainability, and their remarkable intelligence and memory: other than utilitarian tasks, like taking detailed directions through hand gestures or whistles, some border collies can remember thousands of words. Originating from Scottish landrace herding dogs, they became standardized into the brainy breed we know today.

Borders are smart, energetic, and adaptable to lots of different jobs. While originally bred to herd sheep, they can learn to sniff for survivors after natural disasters, tolerate attention as therapy animals, and much more. They’re great at dog sports, and love to run agility courses, catch flying frisbees, and more.

However, their active brains and active bodies mean they need an outlet, and collies without a job to do can be anxious, destructive and neurotic. Border collies without something to do will make something to do, usually out of your couch, curtains or drywall.

Unlike many other modern dog breeds, the majority of border collies are bred for their working ability, not physical appearance. For this reason, you don’t just see coat color variation - the ears, eyes, and even coat length of border collies can be nearly anything, as long as they can herd! Lots of border collie clubs trial dogs in herding real sheep, just like they were bred to do hundreds of years ago. They don’t suffer from many genetic health problems, but still need regular vet care.

A well-bred border collie in an active home with an experienced owner can be a great pet, but in general, they might be too much for a working or sedentary dog lover. They need daily exercise and brain work for both them and their owner to be happy.

Coats

Border collies have 15 standard coats. All coat types come in long and short haired variants, for a total of 30 regular coats.

Border collies are most common in bicolor black and white, but are bred primarily for their working ability, not conformation. Other colors, coat patterns and even eye colors are possible and not considered a fault. As long as the dog is able to herd sheep, take commands and move around with ease, any appearance is allowed.

Border collies are one of the few breeds where merle is not considered a fault, but it is still a lethal color and cannot be bred back onto itself.

Melanistic border collies are all black with a purple belly, tongue and mouth. Albino border collies are white with blue eyes.

The numbers listed on the table below are to use with the /summon command. Dogs exceeding the maximum value will always spawn as white to avoid crashes.
