music composition - freebase-schema/freebase GitHub Wiki
A composition is a written musical work. It includes musical works ranging from classical to modern. It may or may not have words. A composition usually has composer and a lyricist if there are words.
A composition may include smaller compositions such as arias, movements, etc. (e.g. The composition DerRing des Nibelungen includes the smaller compositions Das Rheingold, Die Walkure, Siegfried and Götterdämmerung).
-
Musical arrangements ranging from baroque symphonies to commercial jingles (e.g. Symphony No. 5, La Clemenza di Tito, Highway Star, Victory Fanfare).
-
Musical arrangements varying from small musical parts such as arias, acts, etc. (e.g. O Sole Mio, Der Hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen) to large operatic masterpieces (e.g. Der Ring Des Nibelungen, Les Huguenots).
-
Musical arrangements intended to be performed either with vocals (more commonly known as songs) (e.g. No More Lonely Nights, Daniel) or with musical instruments only (e.g.Pavane Pour Une Infante Défunte, Love's Theme).
-
Original compositions and arrangements (e.g. Reason to Believe, Baby I Love Your Way) as well as classical parodies (e.g The Carnival of Animals).
-
Written music, sheet music, and musical scores.
-
For classical compositions, the terms might include the following:
-
Musical forms and genres such as sonata, symphony, concerto (e.g. Arpeggione Sonata, Symphony No. 6, Violin Concerto).
-
Tempo designations like adagio, allegro, allegretto, etc. (e.g. Adagio in G minor, Allegro Barbaro).
-
Other generic terms used frequently by different composers like capriccio, concerto, movement, nocturne, requiem, magnificat, symphony, suite, etc. (e.g. Capriccio Burlesco, Magnificat in D major, Suite Bergamasque).
-
Musical tracks should not be typed as compositions. A composition is a more general concept than a musical track which represents a particular recording of a song, as recorded on a particular musical album or albums. For instance, there is only one song or composition “I Will Always Love You,” but there are many musical tracks with that title (e.g. I Will Always Love You by Dolly Parton and I Will Always Love You by Whitney Houston).

Use the musical track type for these.
-
Musical plays are not compositions, but the songs that are part of musical plays are. For instance, the play Annie would not be typed as a musical composition but the songs used in it, such as Tomorrow and It's a Hard Knock Life, would be typed as such.

-
Poems and any written work with parts adapted or used in songs (e.g. To Celia, Gadji Beri Bimba).
