Comedy Group (/comedy/comedy_group)
Type Definition
A comedy group is a group or troupe of two or more people who performs or performed comedy as a performing art with the intent of making people laugh. The performance may be before a live audience or recorded. Comedy groups may tell jokes or perform sketch comedy.
Acting in comedic film or television show does not necessarily qualify a group as a comedy group. See below.
Entities That Are Comedy Groups
- Comedy troupes who perform or performed live (e.g. Kids in the Hall or Second City)
- Comedy troupes whose comedic performance has been recorded on a visual or audio format (e.g.Monty Python)
- Duos who meet the requirements above (e.g. The Smothers Brothers)
Entities That Are NOT Comedy Groups
- Groups acting in a comedic role in a fictional film, television program, or theater production (e.g. Dick and Tommy Smothers both act in Cannonball Fever, but their roles in that movie alone do not qualify them as a comedy group)
- Non-cohesive groups brought together simply as the cast of a film or television program (e.g. the cast of "Saturday Night Live" is not a comedy group. Each cast member is an individual comedian.)
- Comedy writing teams
- Films or television programs named after a comedy troupe. (e.g. "Kids in the Hall" is a comedy troupe that appeared in TV program of the same name. There should be two entities representing these two ideas.)
- Clown troupes
- Circuses
