Entering_serialized_and_excerpted_works_of_literature - freebase-schema/freebase GitHub Wiki
If a book (or other long work) has been published in serial installments, you can record this by using the Serialized Work type. Note that work in any media capable of being serialized can use this model, but also note that this type does not usually need to be used for works that are by their very nature serial, such as comic books and comic strips.
-
On the topic page of the book or other work, add the type Serialized Work. The property “Serial Installments” should appear.
-
For each installment:
-
Click the “serial installments” property
-
Enter the name of the installment. Use the title as it appears in the installment – this will sometimes be a chapter title, or may simply be the title of book itself. If the latter, you can add something like "(part 1 of 2)” after the title.
-
Note also that you can enter the installment number in its own field.
-
To indicate where the installment was published, click the name of an installment.
-
Enter the name of the publication in which it appeared in the “published in” property.
-
The majority of the time, this will be a periodical issue. The convention for these is to use some form of the periodical’s title and the date of publication.
-
Click the name of the issue
-
Add the type Magazine Issue or Newspaper Issue. You can now enter any other data about the issue that you like. See also Entering the Contents of a Book or Periodical.
-
Works can also be serialized as short books (the most famous recent example is probably Stephen King’s The Green Mile, which is a novel that was first published as six separate books). If this is the case, enter the name of the book installment.
-
Click the name of the book installment
-
Add the type Book Edition. Book editions link back to books (i.e., each book edition is a specific manifestation of the text of the book); In this case, each installment should also be a separate book.
These steps can also be done in reverse, if, for example, you are entering the contents of a periodical that contains a serial installment. In this case, you should enter the name of serial installment in the “contents” property, following the convention described above.
-
Click the name of the installment.
-
Enter the title of the work being serialized in the property “Serialized Work”.
-
If the serialized work did not already exist in Freebase, the type of work that it is (e.g., Book, Poem, Play, etc.) should be added by clicking on the name of the work, and adding the appropriate type to the topic.
-
If the exact same serial installments have been published multiple times, this should be recorded by adding multiple publications to the serial installments (using the “published in” property), rather than creating multiple serial installments from the master work’s page.
-
If, however, a work was serialized multiple times, but the installments were broken down differently, new installments should be added to the “serial installments” property on the master work.
If the work being serialized is a translation, the steps are the same as for any other type. However, the type "serialized work” should be applied to the translation (listed under the “translations” property of the source work), and not to the source work itself. If the appropriate translation is not listed yet, see Entering a Translated Work of Literature for instructions on how to add it.
Long works of literature often have excerpts published; this is common as a promotion slightly prior to a new book’s publication, and in textbooks and survey anthologies. This is represented by using the Excerpted Work type.
-
On the main page of the work the excerpt is from, add the type Excerpted Work. The property “Excerpts” should appear.
-
Enter the name of the excerpt in the “excerpts” property. If the title is different than the main work, enter that title; if it is the same as the main work, you can either enter the main title, or enter the title followed by "(excerpt)".
-
To indicate where the excerpt was published, click its title.
-
On the excerpt page, enter the title of the place the excerpt appeared in the “published in” property.
-
For periodical issues, the convention is to use some form of the periodical’s title and the date of publication as the title.
-
Click the name of the issue
-
Add the type Magazine Issue or Newspaper Issue. See also Entering the Contents of a Book or Periodical.
-
-
For books, enter the title of the book edition
-
Click the name of the edition
-
If the book edition was not already in Freebase, add the type Book Edition. See also Entering the Contents of a Book or Periodical.
-
If an excerpt is from a translation of a work, the excerpt should be entered the same as for any other work, with the exception that the type "excerpted work" should be added to the specific Translation, and not to the original work. If the appropriate translation is not listed yet, see Entering a Translated Work of Literature for instructions on how to add it.
