Entering a Translated Work of Literature

One of the strengths of Freebase’s data model is the ability to show translators as separate creators than a work’s author.This applies to any type of written work – books, stories, essays, plays, comics, etc.

  • To enter data for a translation of a work, first add the type Translated Work to the topic about that work.

  • The property “translations” should now appear, and you can enter the translation, language it was translated into, and translator there.

  • The name of the translation should be the work’s name in the new language (as best as can be managed with your keyboard, anyway)

  • Multiple translators may be entered for a single translation

Publication Information

A translation is automatically co-typed as a published work; this allows you to enter the publication data for the translation using the "published in" property. Please note that a specific translation can be published multiple times (such as in hardcover and paperback editions, if it’s a book). These should be recorded here, rather than as separate translations. (The advantage of doing it this way is that on the translator’s page, any given translation will be listed only one time, rather than having a separate link for every time it was published. See, for example, the translator Jay Rubin, whose translation of the novel Norwegian Wood has been published at least twice.)

  • If the translation is published in a periodical or anthology, see Entering the Contents of a Book or Periodical for complete instructions on how to record this data.

  • If the translation was published as a book, you can record that by entering the full name of the translated book under the “published in" property. (Often this will be the same title as the translation itself.)

  • Click the book’s title

  • Add the type Book Edition to the topic

  • Under Edition of, enter the name of the source book; this way, the translation will appear both as an edition of the book, and a translation.

  • You can, of course, enter any other data you have for the edition such as publisher or ISBN.

  • If the translation has not been published at all (this is common for plays and songs), you are done. If you like, you can remove the co-type of “published work”.

Serializations and Excerpts of a Translation

Translations, like any published work, can be published in serial format or have an excerpt published independently. To represent this, add the types Serialized Work or Excerpted Work as appropriate. Then see Entering Serialized and Excerpted Works of Literature for full instructions.

Fixing a Translation Which Is Typed as a Book

Translations which have been imported from Open Library or other catalogs will often appear as an independent book by the same author.

The steps required to fix this are:

  • Add the Translated Work type to the original language book

  • In the new Translation property, select the foreign language book

  • Go to the foreign language book and:

  • move the book edition to the published in property (you can cut & paste the URL to make sure you get the exact topic)

  • add the appropriate language to the Target Language property of the Translation type

  • remove the Book and Written Work types

  • Go to the foreign language Book Edition:

  • add the original language book in the edition of property (this way it will be linked as both an edition and translation)
