Childhood (1905-1923)
1910 Census
1910 Census: John was 5 years old and lived with his father, Wilbert, his mother, who was listed with the name Blanche, and his 3 siblings: Catherine (age 8), Hazel (age 7), and Gladys (age 3). His father worked as a laborer in the steelworks. They rented their house at 7521 Melrose Street in Swissvale, Pennsylvania.
1920 Census
1920 Census: John was 15 years old and lived with his father, [Wilbert](Wilbert-Havicon], and his mother Emma, and 6 siblings, Katharine (age 19), Hazel (age 17), Gladys (age 13), Dorothy (age 5), George (age 3), and Winifred (age 1). His parents owned their home in Swissvale, Pennsylvania. His parents were both born in the US, but his paternal grandfather was born in Ireland. His father worked as a coal miner and his two older sisters worked as winders in the motor industry.
Middle Life (1924-1955)
1935 Marriage Record
1935 Marriage Record: John married Eleanor Bishop on August 31, 1935, in Brooke, West Virginia. John lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Eleanor lived in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania. She was 22 years old and he was 30.
1940 Census
1940 Census: John and Eleanor lived in Brentwood, Pennsylvania. They had one son, John W, who was 10 years old, even though they had only been married for 5 years. John worked as a foreman at meter works for 40 hours a week and earned $1600 a year. They owned their home, which was worth $5400. Both John and Eleanor had a 9th grade (1 year of high school) education.
The discrepancy between the marriage date and their son’s date of birth is because the son is adopted. I need to look at the adoption papers again, but my suspicion is that John H. had a relationship with the birth mother, Dorothy Donaldson, and John W. \emph{could have} been his. We’ve learned through DNA tests that he is not/we are not related to the Havicons.
1940 Draft Registration
Registered as John Henry Havicon (instead of John Herbert Havicon), but appears to be the same person as the 1940 Census record, given they are the same age (35), live in Brentwood, Pennsylvania, and work at the meter works. He worked specifically for Pittsburgh Equitable Meter Co. He had blue eyes and brown hair. He put his sister, Dorothy Valperga down as his contact, instead of his wife.
Pittsburgh Post Gazette 1944
John Havicon worked at the Pittsburgh Equitable Meter Company as a assistant shop superintendent
1946 Divorce Decree
1946 Divorce Decree: John and Eleanor divorced on July 17, 1946. The court found that the respondent has ``offered such indignities to the person of Eleanor E. Havicon, the injured and innocent spouse, as to render her condition intolerable and life burdensome''.
1946 Marriage Certificate
1946 Marriage Certificate: John married Jennie M. Curran on October 11, 1946, only three months after his divorce with Eleanor. He was a plant superintendent and she was a production clerk. They lived in Wilkinsburg/Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, but married in Alexandria, Virginia.
Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, City Directory, 1953
- John and Jennie had moved to Wisconsin by 1953 where he was workshop manager at Wells Manufacturing.
Tampa Bay Times, 1971
Moved to St. Petersburg, Florida in the early 1970s. Article also stated he was "Originally from Pittsburgh where he was plant manager for the Rockwell Manufacturing Company"
