1920 Census
Eleanor was age 7 and lived with her father, Charles Bishop and her mother Ora Bishop they lived on a farm, which they owned, in Oswego, New York. Eleanor was born in New York, her mother was born in Kansas, and her father was born in New York.
1930 Census
In 1930 Eleanor was living with Fred and Myrtle, and listed as a step-daughter. I believe these may be other relatives of hers, and neither Fred nor Myrtle was her parent, since in 1920 she was living with Charles and Ora and listed as their daughter, and Fred and Myrtle were living together without her. Fred was 67 years old and Myrtle was 43 years old. They lived at 210 Center Street in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania in a house they owned, worth $6700. Fred's age at first marriage was 26 and Myrtle's was 16, but both marriages were to other people. Fred was a typesetter in an engraving company, Myrtle was the proprietor of a grocery store, and Eleanor was working as a clerk at an electric manufacturer.
1935 Marriage Record: Eleanor married John Havicon on August 31, 1935, in Brooke, West Virginia. John lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Eleanor lived in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania. She was 22 years old and he was 30.
1940 Census: John and Eleanor lived in Brentwood, Pennsylvania. They had one son, John W, who was 10 years old, even though they had only been married for 5 years. John worked as a foreman at meter works for 40 hours a week and earned $1600 a year. They owned their home, which was worth $5400. Both John and Eleanor had a 9th grade (1 year of high school) education.
The discrepancy between the marriage date and their son’s date of birth is because the son is adopted. I need to look at the adoption papers again, but my suspicion is that John H. had a relationship with the birth mother, Dorothy Donaldson, and John W. \emph{could have} been his. We’ve learned through DNA tests that he is not/we are not related to the Havicons.
1946 Divorce Decree: John and Eleanor divorced on July 17, 1946. The court found that the respondent has ``offered such indignities to the person of Eleanor E. Havicon, the injured and innocent spouse, as to render her condition intolerable and life burdensome''.
The divorced Eleanor Havicon moved back in with her widowed mother/step-mother/adopted mother Myrtle (now Bandy, since she remarried after Fred Bishop died). Her mother was 63 and no longer worked outside the home. Eleanor worked as a typist for an insurance company. They lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Myrtle had a 7th grade education and the earnings of the household (ie Eleanor's earnings) were $1920 in the last year.
Eleanor Havicon appears to have filed for Veteran's compensation on her own account for Army service, served both domestically and internationally, from January 5, 1944 to February 11, 1946. From her obituary, she was a nurse, so she may have been serving as a nurse in the army during WWII.
Eleanor married Charles Edward Colton on June 4th, 1951 in Allen, Indiana at age 38.
The Department of Veteran's Affairs BIRLS Death File confirms Eleanor E. Colton was enlisted in the Army from January 5 1944 to February 11 1946.
Elenor died on September 5th, 1984 at age 70 in Vero Beach, Florida and was buried at Calvary Cemetery in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
