Cranky Old Man #91
a frothy mix of leftovers and links

Huge news that flew under my awareness:

After fifty years of work, the Equal Rights Amendment has been ratified by the required 38 states.

Next comes the work of getting the national archivist to certify and publish it, because most of the powers that be seem to be opposed:

Section 1. Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.
Section 2. The Congress shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.
Section 3. This amendment shall take effect two years after the date of ratification.

Sure, Republicans are apoplectic because Biden says he's going to nominate a black woman to the Supreme Court. Even without a proper noun, the melanin and vagina combination terrifies them. All black women are Angela Davis, I guess.

Biden is Biden, though. Whoever he picks will be the most bland, boring, middle-of-the-road black woman available — someone not quite as radical and progressive as, say, Kamala Harris.

Just reading the article, it sure sounds like the case has merit.

It takes a lot of Trump to get me to say "Wow," but…

Trump told Giuliani to seize voting machines after election

It is very remotely possible that Giuliani could be charged, convicted, and imprisoned, but there's no possibility of any of that for Trump, though of course he's marinated in guilt.

These incoming emails from "please do not publish my name" took a few weeks, but add up to a conversation. Possibly it's interesting?

PDNPMN: I like your blog and I wondered, with so few comments I guess you don't have many readers? I used to work in SEO and I would be happy to help with that if you want. No charge.

Well, thank you very kindly. Solicitations to buy search engine optimization began a week after we went online and the spam never ends, but you're the first to offer it gratis — thanks for that, but no thanks. No SEO tricks. I write it because I gotta, and anyone's welcome to read it, but I don't want to push it like drugs.

PDNPMN: I'll respect that of course, just saying that with some tweaking we could make this a very successful blog.

It's a successful blog on days I've said something worth saying. Other days it's not a successful blog. The measure is not numbers.

PDNPMN: I just want more people to read it. No offense if you're not interested.

None taken. Readers are welcome, but the goal is better writing.

I am uncomfortable with most humans. They tend to quickly or slowly reveal themselves to be terrible, so I skip the disappointment by keeping my own company almost exclusively. That's all.

Anyone reading and understanding this might be the rare exception who's proven him/herself worth knowing.

David Letterman now has an (apparently) official channel on YouTube.

Mr Letterman was a funny gent, especially during his shows' first twenty years. You young kids have no idea.

In addition to the expected clips at YouTube, there are some unfunny but interesting behind the scenes videos, like this one about making the show's famous bumper shots.

Supply chain issues slow the delivery of yachts

Jeff Bezos, who has a net worth of $174.7 billion according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, is awaiting delivery of a 417-foot sailing yacht. It’s currently in the final stages of construction at a ship yard in the Netherlands. Steven Spielberg also has one on order, after listing his old yacht for $158 million. It sold in November for an undisclosed price.
