Thumbnails - czbar/ChessForge GitHub Wiki
A thumbnail is a small preview image of a key position that can be assigned to a Study (and this also serves as the thumbnail for the Chapter and Intro), a Game, or an Exercise. Thumbnails are displayed when you hover over items in the Chapters list, helping you quickly recognize their content.
Chapter, Study and Intro Thumbnail
The same visual key position is used for a Chapter, Study and Intro. To set this up, open the Study, go to the desired position (green below), and select Mark as Thumbnail from the right-click context menu (red below):
This generates a Study Thumbnail (also used as the Chapter and Intro thumbnail) and marks the move with a small asterisk * (red below):
Now, in the Chapters view you can hover over chapter's name, intro or study lines (red below) and the thumbnail will pop up (green below):
Game Thumbnail
Each newly added game shows a temporary thumbnail in the Chapters view when you hover over it, based on the setting in Application Options. For more details, see Auto Thumbnails for Games section in Application Options.
You can also assign permanent thumbnails to games by:
- assigning a thumbnail to a single game
- assigning thumbnails to multiple games
Assigning a Thumbnail to a single Game
You can create a custom game thumbnail by navigating to the desired position in the game (red below) and selecting Mark as Thumbnail from the right-click context menu (green below):
This generates the Game (blue below) Thumbnail (green below) and marks the move with a small asterisk * (red below):
Assigning Thumbnails to multiple Games
You can also automatically assign permanent thumbnails to games across chapters using the Set Game Thumbnails function. This is useful, for example, if a variation in one chapter has a key position after the 5th move while a variation in a different chapter has a key position after the 8th move, allowing you to auto-assign different thumbnails for each
In our example we will auto assign thumbnails to all games in Chapter 2 (blue below). Make sure that Chapter 2 is active (green below) and run Set Game Thumbnails function from the Chapter menu (red below):
In the dialog box populate the required parameters and press the OK button (red below):
- Create at Move (green below) - specifies whether the thumbnail is created after White’s or Black’s move
- White or Black (purple below) - decides if the thumbnail is created after White or after Black move
- Overwrite Existing (yellow below) - if some games already have manually assigned thumbnails, you can choose to overwrite them or leave them unchanged
- Apply to All Chapters (blue below) - determines whether thumbnails are auto-assigned to all games in the current chapter or across all chapters
The system assigned permanent thumbnails for all games after White’s 10th move in Chapter 2. You can see the temporary thumbnail for Game 1 of Chapter 2 (red below), created after the 3rd move (dark green below) according to the Application Options setting before running the function, and the permanent thumbnail for the same game (orange below) after the 10th move (light green below) once the function has been applied:
Exercise Thumbnail
For an exercise (red below), the starting position (blue below) becomes its default thumbnail (green below).
You can create a custom thumbnail by navigating to the desired position in the exercise (red below) and selecting Mark as Thumbnail from the right-click context menu (green below):
This generates the Exercise (blue below) Thumbnail (green below) and marks the move with a small asterisk * (red below):
