Common Beasts and Monsters

Zombie

Gargoyle

Xorn

Flail Snail

Displacer Beast

Large black, felines with glowing green eyes and far too many appendages: six legs and two long tentacles, one sprouting from behind each shoulder blade, and each topped with a wide, flat pad lined with fine razor sharp teeth.

They are usually "displaced" meaning that they merely appear to be standing near their actual location, and are very hard to pinpoint. Landing an attack on the beast disrupts this effect for a brief time, leaving them open to attack. src

Owlbear

Part bear, part owl. Apparently the creation of a mad wizard, they now freely roam forests around the Sword Coast. Famously fierce and territorial. src

Basilisk

A terrifying small reptile with six legs, a horned snout, and spiny frills down its skull and back.

Capable of turning a creature to stone with its gaze.

Legend states a basilisk is hatched from the egg of a rooster by a toad or serpent. src

Giant Toad

Frightfully large toads. Capable of swallowing a grown person whole. src

Kuo-Toa

Small fish-like humanoids from below the earth. Easily given over to fits of religious fanaticism, they are easy recruits for any sufficiently powerful cult.

Although they primarily rely on spears and nets to trap and drown their victims, they have also mastered their own brand of exotic weaponry including the pincer staff and the sticky shield. src

Their religious fanaticism grants some of their more devoted divine strength.

Black Pudding

A caustic black ooze of questionable sentience. Hangs out in caves. Melee attacks cause acidic, corrosive damage to the attacker and their weapons (src) Slashing at it only splits it in two and allows it to attack in two fronts. Best to stick to ranged or magic attacks.

Orc

The scourge of the Savage Frontier. Large warlike humanoids who seem to only live to wage war and to create more orcs.

Known clans:

  • The Ear Takers: Named for their gruesome tradition of wearing medallions of dried elf ears around their necks like medals.

Hailing from the same hills in the Dessarin Valley as the Pinback Goblins. They too were displaced by the stirring of the Hill Giants. They suffered greatly from choosing to stay and fight the giants (and losing) and then, when retreating, also being ambushed in the Ardeep Forest by the wood elves who live there.

Warg

Large intelligent wolf-like creatures with shortened snouts and bare faces, almost giving the appearance of a man's face on a wolf's body. 1

They sometimes live alongside goblin clans and allow themselves to be uses as mounts in exchange for shelter and food.

Goblin

Lore states that the goblins were created by the hobgoblins to serve them.

Goblinoids of great diversity, their skin varies from green to yellow to red, and the color of their eyes also span a spectrum of colors from white to red to black.

Some individuals and some entire clans are quite civilized and can be found living peacefully in larger, more cosmopolitan cities.

They tend to be short, not growing much taller than 3 - 4 feet tall. They all have almost comically large heads for their bodies, and long ears. Even civilized goblins have a cultural memory of having been oppressed by larger, stronger races, and of having to fight to eke out the most maeger existence, and so continue to have no qualms doing whatever it takes to get what they think they need to survive or thrive.

Known clans:

  • Pinbacks: Red skinned with red eyes. They wear their long red ears pulled straight back and clipped behind their heads with rings of bone or cheap metals. Originally from the hills of the Dessarin Valley, they fled heir homes after an incursion of Hill Giants drove them out. After settling in some bat caves outside Nightstone, they opportunistically preyed on the villagers and looted their town after a Cloud Giant attack.

  • Hill Howlers: Small orange goblins with large throat pouches and wide cheek pads. They use their throat pouches to communicate long distance via a variety of calls, sounds, howls, and shrieks.

  • Eye Stabbers: mottled pale yellow and light brown, the color of hardened dental plaque. They wear white face paint with dark markings around their eyes and mouths so that their head resembles a skull.

  • Moon Biters: Green goblins who file their teeth to sharp points. Animalistic and frenzied fighters.

Giants

Giants until recently were so rarely seen that many considered them to by myths.
