Character Overview

Dug is a 142 year-old Hill Dwarf who stands at 4'8" with light skin and dark brown hair, peppered in gray. His thick, ragged beard and disheveled appearance match the wild look in his eyes that he gets when thinking. Constantly analyzing, he's endlessly trying to decipher the systems in the world around him.

Since a young age, Dug's had a knack for building things and has always focused on refining his skills. He quickly became proficient at smithing, masonry, and tinkering. Constantly experimenting and trying new approaches, he soon surpassed every one of his guild's masters. Still looking for more guidance in his craft, he turned to the gods of the forge for new ways to enhance his abilities.

What the gods began to reveal was that there is a complex system tying everything together. Laws of creation that could be leveraged, manipulated, and utilized in incredible ways. Even with just a very basic understanding of these mechanics, he had found a powerful new tool. He could break metal items down to their basic material components and reassemble them into something different. He could summon radiant heat and flames, manipulate these forces, and apply them to the world around him in inventive ways. He could even renew and repair things, both material and living, with only a touch.

He began to realize that these new skills had applications much broader than his original, crafty intentions. Dug soon found himself leaving his old workshop, setting out into the world to gain new experiences and understandings. His new life would be full of adventure, trials, and danger--all opportunities for him to analyze, understand, and internalize the complex network of interlinked systems around him.

His recent transition is clearly reflected in gear he wears. Evidence of his old life are easily spotted. His well-used smithing tools still hang around his waist. He still wears his heavy, soot-covered apron and padded gloves. Smithing goggles still adorn his head to keep his hair back. He carries a hefty war-hammer that, with his years of experience at an anvil, feels familiar in his hand. A shirt of heavy, chain mail armor is worn as his primary protection and on his left arm, he carries a huge, round shield. A leather pack is on his back, easily half his size, and full of various gear and crafting materials collected during his adventures.

Dug simply sees his newly found position in The Steel Reserve as a means to accelerate his studies. Any chance to apply his new skills is taken as an opportunity.

Other character traits

  • Curious: With an engineering mindset, Dug always wants to know how things work and what makes people tick.

  • Thrifty: What most would view as junk, Dug sees as valuable material to use in crafting. He's always collecting scraps of metal and other items for later use. Every bit of space in his backpack is filled with old weapons, trinkets, and other objects.

  • Dealmaker: As a side effect of his studies of the complex systems around him, Dug is constantly trying to strike deals and make bargains. He approaches it with a casual air of self-amusement--always trying to see what he can get away with.

  • Obsessive: When Dug is interested in something, he's really interested in it. He will dedicate all his attention to a new undertaking. It's a trait that currently drives his fervent pursuit of his clerical studies. The fire of the forge has all his attention.

  • Restless: He's never satisfied with what he has― Always wanting more.

Alignment

Dug is lawful neutral.

  • Lawful: Dug is not lawful in the typical sense. His studies as a Cleric of the Forge has given him insights into the underlying mechanics of the world and, in his eyes, governmental laws and regulations are mostly just noise floating above this deeper system.

  • Neutral: Good, Bad, whatever. These shallow judgements carry little weight to him. Everything and everyone is just a component of a larger machine.
