When you gain a level in a Class one of the Perks you may gain is Specialization in one of the types of Abilities. You can spend those Specializations to level up Abilities in the specified category. Each Ability will have a maximum level to which it can be raised and each level will do something different depending on the Ability (see the specific Ability's page to learn what specializing in that Ability will do).
