Dual Licensing - bryanedds/Nu GitHub Wiki
After 450 official releases at version 19.12.0 with over 16,350 commits, Nu's original mission of proving the viability and efficacy of functional and declarative game programming is more than accomplished!
Our next mission is entering into the commercial game engine space. For us, it's not enough to prove out our engineering approaches; we also need to start influencing the direction of commercial game development by taking a share of the game engine market. To accomplish this while preserving Nu's open source value proposition, we've decided to start building real engineering equity with the adoption of a dual-licensing model for Nu!
Going forward, we will replace the use of the MIT license with a new license that only permits the distribution of free game software using Nu Game Engine. This will be the default license that anyone can get access to source and use/modify without additional agreement or payment. For commercial game software, we're going to offer a yearly license that includes 10 free hours of live priority support for $99 per year (free support for first 50 licenses only). For those who wish to continue using the current version of Nu with the MIT license, we will maintain an mit branch for such purposes.
By creating this licensing approach, we hope to ensure the sustainability of Nu's development beyond what we could hope for with our current free open source model. By building new engine features such as the Block Editor (announcement soon!) under this new licensing regimen, we will be able seed the sort of engineering equity required to make our project investable and thus sustainable in the long run.
* Live support includes voice and/or video correspondence via discord with a developer within 12 business hours (US East) of the request.
