Give Minecraft more memory
Dungeon Train runs best when Minecraft has 6 GB of memory (RAM) or more.
Most launchers give a modpack 4 GB by default. With Dungeon Train and its companion mods, that fills up. Java then spends its time clearing space instead of running the game, so you get stutters, freezes and low frame rates. In lag reports, players on 4 GB showed exactly this. Players on 6 GB or more didn't.
Pick your launcher
Using something else? Look in the launcher's settings for the game or instance's Java or
memory options. The setting is often called Maximum memory, and some launchers only show it
as a Java argument, -Xmx. Set it to 6 GB, which launchers write as 6144 MB, 6G or -Xmx6G.
How much to give it
- 6 GB is the recommendation. 8 GB is fine if you have plenty to spare.
- Don't give Minecraft more than about half your computer's RAM. Your system and other programs need the rest.
- More isn't always better. Going far above 8–10 GB doesn't make the game faster.
- On a computer with 8 GB of RAM in total, 5–6 GB is about the most you can give it. Close other programs, such as browsers, while you play.
The new value only takes effect the next time the game starts. Fully close Minecraft and launch it again. You don't need to restart the launcher.
The in-game reminder
If Dungeon Train sees that Minecraft has less than 5 GB while your computer has 8 GB or more, it shows a notice on the title screen and one line in chat, once each time you start the game. The check only reads your computer's memory size. Nothing is sent anywhere.
To stop the reminder:
- press Don't show again on the notice, or
- go to Options → Dungeon Train → General and turn off Low Memory Warning.
