How to enable 720p HD quality

Unfortunately most content hosted by VRT NU is only provided in SD quality (max 540p). One exception are the Live TV streams, they are available in HD quality (max 720p).

Hardware support

720p HD quality streaming is more demanding to your hardware, both on CPU as well as network bandwidth. If you experience stuttering or frame skips try using a lower bitstream (see Bandwidth).

Live streams may also take longer to buffer, influencing the user experience.

People have reported different experiences on Raspberry Pi, depending on Raspberry Pi model, Kodi platform and network connection (fixed cable or WIFI). Also the Raspberry Pi self-regulates based on power consumption and temperature, so a good power adapter and cooling is important. In general 720p HD quality should work fine, but your mileage may vary.

Configure InputStream Adaptive

Ensure that InputStream Adaptive is not limiting your bandwidth or stream quality:

Settings - InputStream Adaptive » General » Max. Bandwidth (Bit/s)

Settings - InputStream Adaptive » General » Max. Resolution general decoder

Settings - InputStream Adaptive » General » Max. Resolution secure decoder

Also ensure that it is ignoring your display's resolution if it would be lower:

Settings - InputStream Adaptive » General » Ignore Display Resolution

Disable any artificial bandwidth limitations

If you have any bandwidth limits enabled in Kodi, this will affect proper playback of HD quality streams.

Settings » System » Internet access » Internet connection bandwidth limitation

Settings - VRT NU » Playback » Maximum bandwidth (kbps)

720p HD quality requires about 3584 kbps bandwidth for streaming.

Enable DRM support

Ensure that DRM is enabled when the stream requires DRM support.

Settings - VRT NU » Video » Use DRM (needed for protected content)

Starting from v1.10.0, DRM is no longer required for 720p on live streams, however it is possible that DRM is required temporarily or definitively in the future again.
