Boat Construction - Weber-State-Submarine-Project/Submarine GitHub Wiki
Introduction
This wiki showcases the process of building the autonomous pool mapping boat.
Materials
The following materials were used to construct the boat:
- Box: Resin
- PVC Pipes, Joints, Caps
- PVC Glue & Primer
- Sandpaper
- Polyethylene Foam
- Zip Ties

Boat Building Documentation
After acquiring all the materials, the building process began. Below is a step-by-step documentation of how the boat was built.
Ensuring Hardware Components Locations
Description: Initial planning for hardware placement. This step ensured all major components, including the electronics box and sensors, had designated positions for optimal balance and functionality.
Initial Cutting & Measuring of the Frame
Description: The PVC pipes were measured and cut to form the base frame of the boat. Precision during this step was crucial for creating a stable, symmetrical, and secure structure.
Frame Cutting Completed
Description: All frame components were cut to the required dimensions. This image shows the completed pieces assembled without glue.
Frame Prepared & Glued
Description: The PVC frame was assembled and glued using PVC primer and glue. This step ensured a strong, watertight bond for the boat's structure.
Resin Cracked Box
Description: During initial testing, the resin electronics box cracked while drilling holes for the wires. This highlighted the need for additional reinforcement to withstand operational stresses. We eventually redesigned the box to have the holes already implemented.
Box Repaired with Epoxy
Description: The cracked box was repaired using epoxy resin, making it more durable and resistant to water leaks.
Box Assembled with Frame
Description: The repaired electronics box was securely mounted onto the frame. This step ensured the box was stable and properly aligned with the boat’s structure. All electronics are attached at this point.
Motor Attachment
Description: Custom attachment points for the motors were installed, ensuring they remained securely mounted and correctly positioned for controlling the boat.
Sonars Attachment System
Description: Custom attachment points for the sonars were installed, ensuring they remained securely mounted and correctly positioned for data collection.
Spray Painted Frame
Description: The PVC frame was spray-painted for durability and aesthetics. This also added a protective coating to the frame for better resistance against environmental wear.
Attached Final Box with Frame
Description: The final assembly of the boat, with the electronics box and frame fully secured. The boat was now ready for testing and deployment.
This documentation provides a detailed overview of the boat's construction process, highlighting key steps and the materials used to create a functional and robust design.
