PnK Beanstalk Growing - Wabbit0101/mods_hoardercraft GitHub Wiki
Beanstalks come from Lost Beans; there is no other way to get one. When you plant a lost bean, you get a Beanstalk Sapling that you must fertilize once. Then you wait for that sapling to grow into a beanstalk. Visually beanstalks resemble large jungle trees -- only much much bigger and stuffed full of plunderable loot!
Growth Requirements
A beanstalk sapling has a specific set of requirements for successful growth:
- It grows best in the overworld, preferably in a jungle or dark forest biome for the best chance at a normal Beanstalk. Jungle and dark forest equivalent mod-generated biomes are also fine. Other types of biomes and other dimensions have a significant chance (over 90%) of generating a Failed Beanstalk.
- It must be centered in a flat area at least 5x5 that contains only replaceable blocks above for at least 40-50 blocks. Blocks such as leaves and cobwebs are obviously replaceable, however a beanstalk's trunk will blow through a lot of block types that a regular tree would not, so be aware of what's above this area! Don't try to "stunt" the beanstalk by placing obstacles at lower heights; it just won't grow, ever. The 5x5 area can be of any block whose material is
ground
such as dirt or grass. Mycelium, Manure, or Dirty Dirt are also acceptable substrates for the sapling; however, do not use any kind of Compost or Blessed Earth. Finally, be sure to clear the planting area of any grass, flowers, mushrooms, etc.

Model: average space needed for beanstalk. Note that the crown is HUGE so plan accordingly! The orange ticks represent 5 blocks of vertical space. |
- It must be fertilized with Beanstalk Grow!. Regular bonemeal and other bonemeal equivalents, including this mod's other super fertilizers, will not work. Your sapling will sit there, ungrowing, forever. You need to apply the beanstalk fertilizer only once.
- It will only sprout at night in a light-level suitable for hostile mob spawning. The best time to plant and fertilize your sapling is immediately after sleeping. The sapling goes through at least two more growth stages after it's been fertilized, so planting in the morning gives the game "all day" to update the sapling to the ready-to-sprout stage in time for night. That said, it can take a few day-night cycles so be patient. A poised to grow sapling will emit warning particles as shown in the pictured how-to steps below.

Warning: If you need to move a planted beanstalk sapling for some reason, and don't have a Silk Touch enchanted item, you MUST use a Fortune III enchanted item to break the sapling; otherwise, you will destroy the sapling and not recover the underlying Lost Bean! So, be careful to prepare your area beforehand and plant the bean exactly where you want the beanstalk centered.
Crafting Beanstalk Grow!
Beanstalk Grow! is a super-super fertilizer meant to nourish beanstalk saplings specifically. To create it you need to collect two other super fertilizers: Miracle Tree Grow! and Fecundity Dust. Note that this recipe uses the supercharged version of the tree grow fertilizer that is used to create huge trees. You can use any item registered as rottenflesh
in the Forge registry for the last two items.
Failed Beanstalks
Sometimes your beanstalk sapling sprouts into a failed beanstalk. This will often happen if you try to grow a beanstalk in a colder biome or in a dimension other than the overworld. And sometimes you're just unlucky-- a beanstalk sapling has a 1 in 16 failure rate no matter where you plant it.
Above is an example of a failed beanstalk nestled between two of its regular siblings in a test world. It's much smaller than a normal beanstalk and is not "alive", but even a failed beanstalk is much taller than the tallest regular jungle trees. So you won't get any shiny loot, but you can harvest a lot of fireproof wood and regular jungle leaves and saplings from a failed beanstalk.
Still much bigger than a large jungle tree!
