Files page

The home page lists the projects you can see. Each card plays its animation live on hover.

  • Templates: start from a template or example file (see Templates).
  • New file: a blank file with artboard size presets (phone, tablet, desktop, social, icon…).
  • Import: drop .riv or .oriv files anywhere on the page, or use the Import button. .oriv keeps the editable document and its embedded assets together; the CLI can also export a Git-friendly source folder.
  • Use a card's β‹― menu to rename, duplicate, share, download or delete it; click to open it.

Changes save automatically. The title shows "Saving…" and then "All changes saved". If another tool (the CLI, MCP or another tab) changes the file while it's open, a banner lets you reload or keep your version.

Design mode

Tool Key Use
Select V Click to select, Shift to add, drag to marquee. Drag handles to resize and rotate.
Artboard A Drag to create an artboard
Rectangle, Ellipse, Triangle, Polygon, Star R O Y Shift R Shift O Drag to draw: the preview shows the real shape and its size. Hold Shift for equal sides, Alt to draw from the center, Esc to cancel.
Pen P Click to add points, drag for curves, click the first point to close
Text T Click to add text, then type. Double-click text to edit it later.
Bone B Drag to add a root bone. Select an existing bone first to extend the skeleton from its tip.
Hand H / hold Space Pan. Scroll with Ctrl to zoom.
  • Groups: Ctrl G / Ctrl Shift G. A new group takes the place of its front-most member, so draw order does not change.
  • Skinning: create a bone chain with the Bone tool, select a vector path, then choose Bind bones in Inspector. Edit vertices in the path and select a point to change its four bone influence slots. Each edit is undoable; curve handles follow their point's weights.
  • Bones: with Select active, drag a root bone's base handle to position it, a shaft to rotate it around its joint, or a tip to change its length and angle. Child bones remain linked to their parent's tip. Each gesture is one undo step and can be canceled with Esc. Use the Inspector for precise values.
  • Picking: Ctrl+click selects the object under the cursor even inside a group. Hovering previews what a click will pick (a dashed box for groups, text and images). Dragging a marquee picks at the current level, and skips hidden and locked objects. Ctrl A selects everything at the level you are in, and Alt ] / Alt [ move the selection to the layer above or below. Selecting on the canvas opens the group in the Layers list and scrolls to it; hovering a layer outlines it on the canvas.
  • Moving: drag to move. Smart guides (on by default) snap to the edges and centers of other objects and the artboard and draw pink guide lines; hold Ctrl to move freely. Alt+drag drags a copy, Shift locks the axis, and Esc cancels the drag. A badge next to the pointer shows the position, size or angle while you drag. Smart guides also apply when drawing and when moving artboards, and can be turned off in Preferences or the View menu.
  • Focus: F (or Shift 2) zooms to the selection, Shift 1 fits the artboard, Shift 3 fits every artboard, and double-clicking an artboard's name fits it. Zooming eases in instead of jumping.
  • What a click selects is set by the Groups checkbox in the toolbar (Alt G):
    • on (default): a click selects the whole group. Double-click enters the group and selects the item under the cursor; double-clicking a nested group goes one level deeper. A chip at the top of the canvas shows which group you are inside, and Esc steps back out one level.
    • off: a click selects the exact object under the cursor, however deeply it is nested. Either way, Enter goes inside the selection and Shift Enter selects the parent.
  • Paths: double-click a shape, or press Enter, to edit its vertices.
  • Arrange: Ctrl [ / Ctrl ] change draw order. In Rive, objects higher in the Layers list draw on top.
  • Inspector: position, size, rotation, scale, opacity, blend mode, fills and strokes (solid or gradient), corner radius, trim path, text styling and distance constraints. Colors can link to theme colors.
  • Masks (clipping): draw the mask shape on top, select it together with what it should mask, and choose Use front shape as mask (Ctrl Alt M, also in the right-click menu). The masked objects are drawn only inside that shape, and the mask itself is hidden. The Mask section of the inspector lists every mask on the selection, where you can turn one off with the eye, remove it, or add another shape as an extra mask.
  • Context menus: right-click objects, layers, the canvas, keyframes, timelines, states and transitions.
  • Rulers and grid (View menu, or Alt R / Ctrl '): rulers along the top and left show artboard pixels, highlight the artboard's extent and track the selection. The grid draws over the active artboard at the spacing set in Preferences (20 px by default), and Snap to grid (Ctrl Shift ') makes dragged objects stick to its lines.
  • Guides: drag from the top or left ruler to pull out a guide line (blue). Objects stick to guides when you move or draw near them, like in Photoshop; hold Ctrl to move freely. Drag a guide to reposition it, or drag it back onto the ruler to delete it. Ctrl ; shows or hides guides and Clear guides is in the View menu. Guides are saved per file in this browser and are not written to the .riv.

Animate mode (Tab)

  • Timelines: create them in the timeline panel. Set duration, fps, speed and loop (one shot, loop, ping-pong).
  • Auto-key: in Animate mode, any property you change at the playhead gets a keyframe. K keys the selected objects' transforms.
  • Keyframes: drag to move, Shift-click to select several, right-click to set interpolation (hold, linear, cubic presets) or delete. The curve editor tweaks cubic easing.
  • Copy and paste keyframes: Ctrl C / Ctrl X copies the selected keys, and Ctrl V pastes them at the playhead, keeping their spacing and easing. Right-click empty timeline space to paste at that exact frame instead. Keys can go into another timeline, and β€” when they all came from one object β€” onto whichever object is selected, which is how you reuse a move on a second shape. Keys that don't fit the target (a property it doesn't have) are skipped with a note.
  • Playback: Enter play/pause, , . step frames, Alt , Alt . jump between keyframes, Home/End.

State machines

State machines make files interactive:

  1. Add a state machine, and properties in the Data tab (number, boolean, trigger, string, color). Properties are what your app sets at runtime; they replace state machine inputs, which Rive deprecated (see data binding).
  2. Add states with Add state (or right-click the graph) and pick a timeline for each. Add a 1D blend state to blend timelines by a numeric parameter. Drag from one state's edge to another state to create a transition. Connect Entry (or Any State) to your first state.
  3. Select a transition to add conditions (for example hover == true, or press fired) and set its duration.
  4. Add listeners (Listeners tab): choose a target shape and a pointer event, then set data properties, fire a custom event, or align a node to the pointer. The Events tab creates named events and their payload fields; select an event listener to react to an event reported by the runtime.
  5. Press Ctrl Enter to preview the state machine on the stage and interact with it.

Preview

Preview (Ctrl P) opens the file full-screen in the official runtime:

  • choose the artboard, state machine or timeline ("All timelines" plays every timeline together)
  • change inputs, and view model properties for data-bound files
  • watch fired events in the log, and switch backgrounds (dark, light, transparent)
  • download the .riv, or Bundle this whole screen as a folder you can ship β€” see preview bundles

Export

Export (Ctrl E) downloads the .riv. Load it with any Rive runtime. Check this file opens a report for missing assets, preserved unknown data, and features that currently have limited editing support. Export GIF or sprite sheet renders the selected timeline on-device. The Code panel's Embed tab has ready-made snippets. For editable backups and CI checks, see Git-friendly sources and backups.

Export preview bundle (Ctrl Shift E, in the OpenRive menu) downloads a zip that plays the file on its own: index.html, an index.js player, the .riv and the Rive runtime. Unzip it, serve the folder, and you have the preview screen without OpenRive β€” see preview bundles.

Preferences

Ctrl , opens editing defaults: new shape fill (cycle colors or a fixed color), default stroke, text color and size, interpolation for new keys, nudge distances and pixel snapping. Preferences are saved per browser.

Undo

Every change can be undone (Ctrl Z) and redone (Ctrl Shift Z / Ctrl Y), including script runs and imports.
