User Testing

Methods used:

  • Observations
  • Brief Interviews

Observations

Participants were asked to play the game. Some of the tasks were:

  1. Select Forager unit(s)
  2. Move Forager unit(s)
  3. Deselect Forager unit(s)

Results

  1. User 1
  • User took 30 seconds to select Forager unit(s).
  • User couldn't identify whether the unit was already selected or not.
  • User couldn't differentiate whether the unit was already deselected or not.
  • User could figure out how to assign a unit to do foraging in less than 10 seconds.
  • User suggested to change the way to deselect a unit from using an escape key to clicking an empty area on the map.
  1. User 2
  • User could easily identify and select Forager unit(s).
  • User couldn't identify whether the unit was already selected or not.
  • User couldn't differentiate whether the unit was already deselected or not.
  • User could perform foraging resources easily.
  • User suggested to change the way to assign a unit to do foraging from clicking the unit then the resource to holding the unit then drag it to the resource.
  • User suggested to highlight the selected unit(s).

Brief Interviews

Participants were asked to answer several questions after they played the game. The questions were:

  1. What do you think of the Forager unit design?
  2. How do you know which units are the Forager units?
  3. What do you think of the experience in the way you select and deselect units?
  4. If you have one thing to improve from the current design, what is it?

Results

a. User 3

  1. User thinks that the design is well-made.
  2. User can identify the Forager units by looking at the tools (Axe).
  3. User thinks it is confusing since there is no way to tell which units are selected/deselected.
  4. Highlight which units are selected/deselected

b. User 4

  1. User thinks that the design is too plain.
  2. User can identify the Forager units by looking at the tools (Axe).
  3. User thinks it is confusing since there is no way to tell which units are selected/deselected. Moreover, it is not simple to use different control to select units and assign them to forage resources.
  4. Highlight which units are selected/deselected. Moreover, change the control to use mouse left-click to select, deselect, and assign units to forage resources.
