Art Style

Gameplay

  • top-down view, can navigate throughout the map
  • Arrow or mini-map to indicate where the safehouse is
  • 16-bit pixel art
  • 5 different sprite to convey motion (more fluid movement vs 2 and 3)

Colors

  • prefer monotone color palate
  • dull colors (ie. inspiration Don't Starve)

Messages / Objectives

  • contrasting text and container (ie. black text within a white bubble, white text and black outline) Grabs the player's attention while fitting into a monotone color palate
  • fade-in effects
  • transparency 50%
  • lean into thick serif fonts (eg. [Old Newspaper Types])

Story cut-scenes (optional?)

  • up to the designer, can use pre-generated 3D animations, can use 2D cut-scenes with parallax effect
  • Short (up to 30 seconds) to brief the player on the story

Influence 1: parallax effect:

The style shown in the children's TV show Peppa Pig which displays a scrolling background with a stationary foregrounded sprite will be a key influenced to how to game will show users they are moving. It should be noted that the simplistic drawing style used will not be a key influence in the game. The game will also use this influence by including a 2d style with a foreground and background with touches such as shadows to create a 3d effect

Influence 2: art style

The game will include a post apocalyptic moody style of art as seen in games such as Don’t Starve. This will include dark monotone colour palettes, and fog like effects which limit the users vision. However the hand-drawn style will not be used in our game.

Influence 3: pixel art

The art style in which the graphics will be created is pixel art which can be seen in the example, lone survivor. This game also includes a side view perspective which will not be used in our game. However the way in which the sprites are designed will be a useful influence when creating players and enemies within our game.

Influence 4: dino run

Although the game dino run was an initial influence for the game and may still be useful in planning the games story line and fluidity, it no longer influences the art style in which the game will be created. Although it uses pixel art, it is a very simplistic version of this art style which we will expand on and create more realistic and detailed versions within this style of art. The colour scheme used in this game is also not similar to the style that will be used in our game.

Influence 5: FTL This game shows a good example of the use of top down perspective and simple art styles in one game. This will be a major influence on the art style of our game as we will include the same perspective and art style as FTL.
