The new Main Menu Title and Buttons User Test - UQdeco2800/2021-ext-studio-2 GitHub Wiki

Background and Goals

We have designed and implemented a new style of the title, word fonts and buttons on the main menu:

  • All words and buttons in the main menu have been redeveloped, so we need to run a user evaluation test to gain feedback for the new design.
  • The new button layout design is set to solve some previous problems that too many buttons were put on the main menu and made the menu hard to use.
  • In addition, the new font style and colour of buttons are supposed to be better related to the topic of the game that expresses a tense and exciting atmosphere.

This user test is to get enough feedback to improve our design.

Changes from Sprint4: Since the version implemented in Sprint 3 has been reported with a bug as the position of some buttons are incorrect while in the full-screen mode. Thus, we fixed the problem and do renewed user testing.

Process

Our survey is divided into two parts:

  1. Potential target population:
  • We invite them to watch the prototype of the new main menu;
  • After the demonstration, we interviewed a few questions about their feeling when seeing the new style and layout of words and buttons.
  1. Professional developer/designer:
  • Show them the prototype;
  • Ask them questions about the layout and font setting of the main menu;
  • To collect some suggestions from them.

Sample Questions

Potential target population:

  • Do you think the new style of words and buttons clearly and precisely expresses the topic of the game?
  • Do you think the new font, colour and position layout of words and buttons are aesthetically beautiful?
  • What do you think needs to be improved?

Professional developer/designer:

  • Do you think the new style of the button did a great job in terms of functionality?
  • From the aesthetic point of view, what do you think needs to be improved?
  • From the principle of interaction, do you think the font setting and layout of buttons on the screen are suitable?

Sprint 3 Summary

  • After interviewing four students (result above), many participants claimed that the new design is closer to the atmosphere of the game. In addition, they are all highly valued for the graphic design of the icons, font setting and screen layout.
  • This new button design received unanimous praise from both groups of participants. All participants agree that the new design makes the user better feel the atmosphere and the tense of the game's topic.
  • Regarding the downside of the design, some participants pointed out that some buttons are a little bit too dark, which slightly influenced the readability of the button.
  • All feedbacks are valuable and will be considered for the next sprint.
