The all-female science team that discovered Sapphory later became known as the Founding Mothers, a reference to America's founding fathers. The five women, an international team studying tropical storm activity in the Pacific were blown off course by the very event they had been sent to study, Storm Daphne, and found themselves in an area few ships had any reason to enter.

They discovered an island, formed by underwater volcanic activity approximately ten years earlier, then amazingly undiscovered for all that time. This was likely to do with the reduced Pacific trade caused by the ongoing US-Chinese cold war, and the existence of a satellite 'neutral zone' over the Pacific, (another result of international tensions) preventing observation from space.

Information about the Founding Mothers is well documented in Sapphorian history, as they are considered to be the five most important women in the country's entire history, giving Sapphorians not only a home, but also the means to reproduce asexually. Every Sapphorian girl knows their names, as they are one of the first subjects taught in primary school history lessons.

The five Founding Mothers

Founding Mother Alancia, also known as Alancia the Beautiful, was the leader of the expedition and hailed from France. She held that all women should have the right to reach their full potential, and it is for this guiding principle that Saint Alancia's was named after her.

Founding Mother Aurora, also known as Aurora the wise, hailed from Great Britain and was the ship's translator. A skilled diplomat, Aurora mediated many early disputes among the island's settlers and spearheaded attempts to negotiate with the outside world. Later, she averted civil war by brokering the Treaty of Fivaviana.

Founding Mother Fallulah, also known as Fallulah the Nurturer, had been born in one of the most beautiful parts of her native Finland, and was a keen botanist. In Sapphory, she set her hand to ensuring that beauty and aesthetics would be at the heart of the colonisation effort, and Fallulah Park in Sapphory City is named in her honour.

Founding Mother Kusankhana, also known as Kusankhana the Merciful, from South Korea was the ship's doctor and a brilliant geneticist. She pioneered the revolutionary Female Asexual Reproduction process, which was the final piece of the puzzle in establishing and maintaining an all-female society.

Founding Mother Mara, also known as Mara the Passionate was from Italy. She believed that faith was central to a good life, and founded Sapphory's church.
