My Experience as a Mental Health First Aider

Hosted by Matthew Butt

My company has adopted a Mental Health First Aid scheme (run my MHFAEngland), and in January I trained to be a Mental Health First Aider. I've found the skills and resources very useful in working with colleagues who are experiencing stress, and for opening up discussions about mental health. I would like to share my experiences of the training and my first few months in this role.

How can we reduce the Carbon Footprint of the systems we create?

Hosted by Matthew Butt

Thanks to Extinction Rebellion, decarbonisation is finally on the agenda.

What does this mean to us as software developers? What can we do to reduce the carbon footprint of the systems we create?

I don't have any answers, but I have some questions, so join me for a conversation:

  • What techniques can we use to reduce the resources our systems need to run?
  • What types of infrastructure have lower resource demands?
  • What is the impact of our choice of technology on our users and their devices? How can we write applications that make lower demands. (Slack, I'm looking at you!)
  • What are the best service providers for low-carbon computing?
  • Can we use technology to replace high-carbon systems?
  • What other resources and externalities should we be thinking about?

This Twitter thread may be a good conversation starter: https://twitter.com/monadic/status/1133678258338373632

Roleplaying a toxic pair

Hosted by Tim Schraepen

In this session I'll roleplay a couple of toxic characters and you, as my pairs, get to discover how you deal with these characters. The rest of the group watches the interaction. Afterwards we discuss a little bit on the interaction we just witnessed, and somebody else sits next to me and they'll get to be pairing with the next character.

Code review

Hosted by Tom Oram

During some of the previous SoCraTes UK events people have put some of their code up for public review. I found these very brave and productive discussions. This year I have a Tic Tac Toe game written in Haskell which uses some more advanced Haskell patterns. I'd like to share this with the aims of 1) getting some feedback from Haskell experts, and 2) perhaps sharing some Haskell approaches with people with less experience.

Alternatively, if no one is interested in Haskell, maybe someone else has a code base they'd like to present.

Synthetic Monitoring

Hosted by David C and Tania L

We've wet our feet with monitoring and testing in our production environments, we'd like to hear from you. The two of us will first share our trials and tribulations, what worked and what didn't and how we think a team can approach this new frontier.

Beyond Selenium

Hosted by David C and Tania L

We've also had some time to explore tools that aren't Selenium. David will share a short introduction to Karate while Tania can share about cypress Let's expand our toolbelts :D

Beyond Job Titles

Hosted by Jakob

I have been thinking a lot about how companies can motivate employees without giving them meaningless job titles and therefore growing the hierarchy pyramid. I'd like to chat to people about their experiences with flat hierarchies and explore if it is a viable way of running a company.
