Campfires are light source blocks, like torches, that emit light at level 15. By default, a Campfire will not burn entities walking across it. This can be toggled by setting the gamerule doesCampfureBurn to true.
Campfires are capable of lighting nearby blocks on fire. The wooden campfire will spread fire in any direction except downwards while the stone Campfire will only spread upwards.
In addition to the crafting recipies campfires can be lit and unlit. To light a Wood and Stone Campfires merely click one with coal. For the opposite effect, putting out a lit campfire, right click with a bucket of water.
