Slicer Setup - Phil1988/FreeDi GitHub Wiki

Is this step needed?

FreeDi works out of the box with any slicer without special configuration. You can start printing immediately using standard G-code and this section is fully optional.

However, configuring your slicer for FreeDi enables additional features that improve the printing experience and efficiency.

⚠️ Quick Context: Basic slicing works immediately. Configuration takes ~15 minutes and adds improved thumbnails, smarter preheating, and model-specific optimizations.

What Slicer Configuration Adds

High(er)-quality thumbnails
Display preview images of your prints directly on FreeDi's LCD screen before starting.

Optimized sequences
For example improved heating logic with chamber air circulation and efficient bed usage reduces preheating time by 2-5 minutes.

Consistent Z-offset
Proper mesh bed leveling timing ensures reliable first layer height across all prints.

FreeDi-specific features
Utilize all FreeDi tweaks including display integration, status updates, and model-specific optimizations.

Configuration is recommended if:

  • You want nicer thumbnails on your printers display
  • You print with heated chamber materials (ABS, ASA, Nylon)
  • You want faster heating and optimized sequences
  • You want the full FreeDi experience

Supported Slicers

All slicers that I am aware of being supported (tell me if you find that unicorn, that doesnt :D ) Configuration guides are available for the most common slicers:

[OrcaSlicer] – Recommended
Modern fork with excellent klipper support and fast feature integration.

[PrusaSlicer]
Popular open-source slicer, stable and well-documented.

[QidiSlicer]
The Slicer that QIDI provides for it's modells - based on PrusaSlicer. Since some breaking bugs in some releases and the slow fixing time, I do not recommend it.

[QidiStudio]
The Slicer that QIDI provides for it's modells - based on OrcaSlicer. Since some breaking bugs in some releases and the slow fixing time, I do not recommend it.

[SuperSlicer]
Enhanced PrusaSlicer fork with additional fine-tuning options.
