When you have more torque you have less speed, but more traction on your tires.

When you have more speed you have less torque, but you lose traction on your tires.

The more torque you have the lower the top speed is but the more pushing power there is, as well as the faster you can accelerate. The less torque there is then you have a higher possible top speed.
- More torque is generated by having a lower gear. The inverse is also true
