Fabricating External Structures - LoCO-AUV/loco_config GitHub Wiki
NOTE As of January 2025, we recommend the skeletonized parts shown at the bottom of this page.
The list of external structure parts needed for LoCO is below. Using the tips from the general fabrication instructions page, fabricate these parts with a 3D printer and laser cutter, then have them prepared for assembly into the full robot (instructions for which follow later).
3D Printed Parts
1 x Back Thruster Support
CAD - Back Thruster Support
STL - Back Thruster Support
Holds the two rear thrusters and attaches to one of the center braces. 1/4-20 bolts are used to connect it to the center braces and the thruster mounts.
2 x Center Braces
CAD - Center Braces
STL - Center Braces
Connects the two tubes together with M4 bolts to the aluminum tube clamps, and 1/4-20 bolts to the external structure and thruster mounts.
3 x Thruster Mount
CAD - Thruster Mount
STL - Thruster Mount
Attaches to the T100 thrusters with M3 screws and attaches to the frame of the robot with 1/4-20 bolts.
Alternative Using Skeletonized Parts and Heatset Inserts
The reasons for these parts are
- They are more robust. The curvature reduces strain on the T-Bar when lifting from the aft-section.
- The T-Bar provides a 1/4-20 heatset slot for using an eye bolt, which can be configured to clip the tether to the T-Bar, reducing strain on the penetrator connection.
- M6 heatset inserts are easier to deploy in the field.
- The honeycomb structure is very strong and permits water passthrough, which minimizes the amount of water absorbed by the 3D material.
