Final Minecraft Project

Final Minecraft is a Fabric mod for Minecraft Java Edition that adds Final Fantasy inspired content, developed by Lafolie.

This mod is currently in alpha development and only adds Elemental Aspects, Damage Numbers, and Crystals.

Many more features, and much more content is planned.

Update Policy

  • Final Minecraft is a Fabric mod. A Forge port will never be created.
  • Final Minecraft development will always target the latest stable release of Minecraft. Whenever a new minor version is released (i.e. 1.18.x --> 1.19.0) development will cease for the old version shortly after.
  • Old releases will remain available for download, and will receive limited time support after being deprecated.
  • Final Minecraft will not be 'back-ported' to older versions.
  • If possible, development will target snapshots so that the mod may be immediately available on the release of new Minecraft versions.

Players are free to download and compile the source themselves to play unstable development versions.

Project Aims

The Final Minecraft project is designed and developed with these main concerns in mind (in no particular order):

Vanilla Tastes Good

Vanilla features shall not be removed, or altered in a way that detracts from the experience. New features should be balanced as to retain the difficulty - Final Minecraft is not a 'Quality of Life' or 'Utility' mod.

Enhance, not Overhaul

Many of the planned features have huge impacts on vanilla Minecraft gameplay. The mod should be designed as to not completely overshadow the base experience, or make vanilla content obsolete.

Overhauling vanilla content should be a last resort when all other balancing strategies are infeasible.

Quality, not Quantity

Final Minecraft should be a high quality mod. Bugs, performance issues, and balancing should take priority over new content and features. Every release will undergo a polish pass once content has been frozen.

Forever Free

Free as in freedom. Final Minecraft is, and always will be, Free Open-Source Software licensed with GNU GPLv3. This is a copyleft license, meaning that any derivates must bear the same license, and that the derivative source code must be made available for free. The GPLv3 also means that anyone is free to do as they wish with the source code.

Three Cs

Final Minecraft shall emphasise:

  • Customisation - of your in-game character
  • Configurability - with easy to use options
  • Compatibility - with other mods, within reason

Influence & Faithfulness

This mod is a labour of love, and a tribute to the Final Fantasy series.

Final Minecraft takes influence from a wide range of Final Fantasy titles. Certain games are leant towards, particularly when they offer better means to add an element of customisation.

Series staples should be the focus of the mod where possible. Where absolute faithfulness is not a good fit, new ideas should build on top of existing Minecraft content and mechanics, with a Final Fantasy flavour. Final Fantasy vernacular should be used where possible.

Individual characters (protagonists/villains) will not be a focus of the mod. Minecraft is all about creativity, where you carve your own narrative.

The Elemental Aspect system from Final Fantasy XI was chosen because it is simple and easy to digest, but also incorporates many Elements. It is diverse, and leaves room for lots of playful design. The addition of Poison and Gravity is a placemark for future content.

The damage numbers feature was implemented on a whim after completing the Elemental damage algorithm. It's not really Final Fantasy without damage numbers, is it?

The Crystals content is derivative of multiple games. First of all the shard items are based on XI's crystal items. The large Home Crystals are based on Crystal Chronicles, with the pedestal blocks being based on V.

Everyone has their own bias, their own favourites. FF happens to be a series that I've always loved, but less so with the later titles. Call it nostalgia or being a grumpy-luddite-hater, I prefer the older games, man.

With that being the case, you will find lots of references and influence from them. However, I really am trying to incorporate a little bit of everything here. When I'm planning new features I always consider which titles have been 'left' out, particularly my least favourite.

So, to be perfectly transparent, I will list here, in order, my biggest influnces for FMC.

  1. FFT, FFVI, FFV
  2. FFXI, FFXII, FFVII
  3. FFI, FIII, FFIV, FFIX
  4. FFTA2, FF Crystal Chronicles, FF Explorers, FFXIV

Don't fret if your favourite is not on the list. I despise XIII, but even some features from that are planned ;)

My goal with FMC is make something that everyone can enjoy, to do something ambitious, to build on the base Minecraft experience in a unique-yet-inspired direction. What I envision is a version of Minecraft with high quality, tried-and-tested, beloved, genre-defining RPG mechanics that respect the base game. I want to pack it to the brim with detail and tasteful nods. I want you to forever be realising little homages and callbacks to the FF franchise. It's all about the smiles, man.

Well, I hope you enjoy it anyway. ~Lafolie
