No Final Fantasy tribute would be complete without Crystals!

Crystals play an important role in Final Minecraft. They are difficult to acquire, but grant players powerul benefits.

Crystal Shards

Crystal Shards are the starting point for all crystal-related items. They are rare drops from all mobs. The base drop chance is currently a little over 1%, but can be increased in various ways:

  • By using enchanted weapons
  • By utilising the Elemental Aspects system
  • By Zodiac Compatibility

By themselves, Crystal Shards don't have any special properties, but they can be crafted into Crystals.

Crystals

A Crystal can be crafted from 9 Crystal Shards. There are 11 different types of Crystal - one for each Elemental Aspect, and an un-aspected Crystal. Both types of crystals can be crafted into compact storage blocks.

Elemental Crystals

A regular Crystal crafted from shards can be crafted into an elemental variant. These crystals can be combined with equipment (swords, tools, armour, etc.) in a Smithing Table to imbue them with an Aspect. Each piece of equipment can only have a single Elemental Aspect - to add a different one it must first be removed in a Grindstone. It is important to note that Elemental Aspects are not enchantments, they are intrinsic properties of an item.

Un-Aspected Crystals

These Crystals have no innate Elemental Aspect. They can be crafted into elemental Crystals [recipe undecided]. Their blocks are used to build Home Crystals.

Crystal Blocks

All Crystals can be crafted into compact storage blocks that can also be used for decoration. Crystal Blocks are translucent and colour-tinted. The un-aspected variant can be used to build a Home Crystal. Like other compact storage blocks, Crystal Blocks are crafted from 9 Crystal items.

Crystal Pedestals

The Crystal Pedestal block is mostly a decorative block, but it is necessary for building and stabilising a Home Crystal. It is crafted from a Block of Redstone surrounded by 6 blocks of Polished Diorite, and a Block of Obsidian above and below. Pedestal blocks also output a redstone signal based on the charge level of the crystal it houses.

Home Crystals

The Home Crystal is a special structure that is built by players, similar to a Nether Portal or Beacon. The block itself is unobtainable. They emit light at the maximum level, and hover above their pedestal.

Home Crystals are very expsenive to create, and are designed to prevent abuse of their bonuses. They also require upkeep.

Building a Home Crystal

Building a Home Crystal is an arduous task. First of all you will need a Crystal Pedestal block to build the structure on. The structure will not be detected if the pedestal is not present.

Once you have placed the pedestal, you will need 38 Blocks of Crystal, the un-aspected variant. Elemental Crystal Blocks currently do not work (by design, though this may change in a future update).

The structure is built by placing a single block on top of the pedestal, followed by 4 layers of 3x3 squares, and finally the last block is placed in the centre of the top layer.

If done correctly, the blocks will be replaced by a giant Home Crystal block.

Bonuses

Home Crystals are intended to be a centrepiece of your base/castle/city/etc. Similar to beacons, they provide bonuses to all players in a wide area.

MP Regeneration

A Home Crystal with any amount of charge remaining will restore MP to all nearby players.

Free Job Change

A Home Crystal with more than 50% charge will allow nearby players to change Jobs without a penalty.

Stabilisation

As powerful objects, Home Crystals must be stablised by a pedestal block. If the pedestal is removed the crystal becomes destabilised, so it should be replaced as soon as possible.

Charge

Home Crystals must be charged. A well-charged crystal provides more benefits. Crystals lose their charge over time and must be recharged. A fully charged, stabilised crystal takes 24 hours (real-time) to deplete. A newly constructed Home Crystal starts with 1 hour of charge.

An unstablised crystal seeps power, and will rapidly lose its charge.

Recharging

To recharge a Home Crystal, interact with it to open the Home Crystal screen. Place any crystal item (shards/crystals/blocks) in the fuel slot and the crystal will begin to recharge. Home Crystals must be stabilised in order to recharge. Different kinds of crystal items grant different amounts of charge:

  • Crystal Shards: a small amount of charge
  • Crystals: an average amount of charge
  • Crystal Blocks: a large amount of charge

The amounts increase slightly for each tier of item: a single Crystal will give more charge than 9 Crystal Shards. Home Crystals recharge 5 times faster than they lose charge, and do not lose charge while recharging.

Damage and Depletion

A poorly maintained Home Crystal will eventually lose all of its charge. When this happens, a 1 hour countdown will begin. Inspired by FFV, once the countdown reaches zero the Home Crystal will shatter and explode!

Similarly, if a Home Crystal is damaged (any of its blocks broken), it will immediately explode.

For this reason, it is important to ensure that a Home Crystal is well-maintained and well-defended. The explosion is comparable to that of the Wither, and few shards will remain.

Growth

As powerful objects of nature, Home Crystals promote natural growth in their immediate vicinity. Grass and flowers will bloom, crops will grow, and vines will sprout around it. If left unattended, the vines will completely surround the crystal and any nearby blocks.
