Using dev builds on Windows - KSP-CKAN/CKAN GitHub Wiki

Hi! If this page opened automatically and you're not sure why: You have chosen to use CKAN dev builds on Windows, and sometimes when a CKAN update is downloaded, Windows users see a message like this (and Windows automatically deletes the update):

This is a false positive, meaning that Windows' malware scanner has mistakenly identified a threat that doesn't actually exist. It does this quite often (and dev builds are created too frequently for it to be practical to submit them for manual review by Microsoft), so it's not practical to use both this malware scanner and CKAN dev builds. You will have to choose one or the other; see below for details.

Turn off "reputation-based protection"

If you want to keep using CKAN dev builds on Windows:

  1. Start → type "App & browser control"
  2. Click "Reputation-based protection settings"
  3. Check apps and files: Off
  4. Potentially unwanted app blocking: Off

This will allow CKAN dev builds to be downloaded and used.

It also carries inherent risks, since you would be disabling part of Windows' strategy to keep your computer safe. The CKAN team is not responsible for this and does not recommend either path here. Use at your own risk! If you decide you want to keep the malware scanner enabled instead, see below.

Turn off dev builds

If you want to keep using Microsoft's malware scanner:

  1. Run CKAN
  2. Settings → CKAN Settings
  3. Uncheck "Use dev builds" in the Auto-Updates box

This will configure CKAN to update itself to stable releases only (which will be submitted for manual review if the malware scanner mistakenly flags them).
