Installation Instructions

JOverseer is built for Java version 8 (previously known as version 1.8) or later. Later versions of java work fine and are preferred. You can download java for your computer from oracle here. Oracle have changed their licensing terms, but java is still 'free' for non-commercial use.

If you feel that you can't agree to their terms, jOverseer works fine with other implementations of java, such as OpenJDK.

If you have any issues with getting the jOverseer installer running check out Troubleshooting Installation on Windows.

Windows

Install

Download and run the setup program joverseer-setup-1.23.0.exe. It installs in C:\Program Files\

Starting

To run jOverseer, find the jOverseer shortcut located under Start Menu->jOverseer

Linux/*nix

Install

Download the zip package joverseer-libraries-v1.0.12.zip. Unzip to your preferred folder (i.e. desktop\JOverseer) Then download the latest update latestupdate.zip, and install on top of the previous one.

Starting

On linux / unix, run unix-launcher.sh located in the installed directory.

MacOS

Install

  1. jOverseer is not available from the Mac Store. (Apple insist on developers bundling a large java runtime with their java applications)
  2. Check that 'Gatekeeper' on your computer has permission to install software from 'anywhere'. You can change it back after you have installed jOverseer.
    1. Open the System Preferences window — click the Apple icon at the top-left corner of your screen or click the System Preferences icon on your dock.
    2. Click the Security & Privacy icon.
    3. If the section 'Allow apps downloaded from' option is set to 'Anywhere' then you don't need to do any more, so close the window and skip to downloading the file.
    4. Otherwise, Click on the lock icon at the bottom left of the window, and enter your password.
    5. Then Click on the 'Anywhere' option.
  3. Download the package file jOverseer1.16.0.pkg
  4. Click on the download package, and it should install.
    1. A window may appear, complaining that joverseer is from an unidentified developer. This is expected. If you are offered a button marked 'open' then click on it.
    2. If you are only offered a 'cancel' button, then click it and try again by Clicking on the download package while pressing the Ctrl key.
  5. The installer will see if you have a suitable version of java installed, and will let you know if you need to download and install one.

Starting

Just Click on the jOverseer icon, found under 'Other' in the Launchpad.

Now you can go back and set Gatekeeper to 'Allow only apps downloaded from' a more secure option.

Uninstalling

Because the App hasn't come from the App Store, you can't just drag the jOverseer icon from the LaunchApp screen to trash to uninstall. You must use Finder to locate jOverseer.app in the top level Applications directory and delete it from there, by draging to trash or Ctrl-Click->Move to Trash.
