How to Create New Ship Models by pipakin

If you're using the RDN Tools you'll need:

  • Maya 3.0
  • Photoshop 5(?)

If you're using the community tools you'll need:

  • A modelling program that supports Wavefront ".obj" files (I use Milkshape3D)
  • A graphics program that supports ".tga" (almost any one)
  • OBJ->HOD Importer for importing the model itself
  • HardEd for editing ship hardpoints (where to put the guns and engines and such)

Creating the Model

  1. Create a box
  2. Manipulate it's shape
  3. Extrude some faces
  4. Manipulate their shapes
  5. Repeat

Creating and Assigning the Textures

  1. Create a material
  2. Assign a texture map to it
  3. Assign it to a number of groups (by selcting them, then clicking "assign" on the material tab)
  4. Keep those groups selected
  5. Go to Window > Texture Coordinate Editor
