Rudder - ChrGri/DIY-Sim-Racing-FFB-Pedal GitHub Wiki

When using the pedals for flight simulators, it's possible to use two pedals for rudder control by connecting them wirelessly. This will allow them to move together and track like a true rudder would.

[!NOTE] Rudder capability requires the use of [[Wireless] wireless connectivity for your pedals. Make sure you have the pedals connected wirelessly with a wireless bridge before you attempt to enable Rudder.

Enabling the capability

When enabled, the pedals will reset with the starting position half-way through their full movement, which allows the pedals to move back and forward together. Check that your pedal design allows enough range of motion for this.

Steps

  • Open SimHub and open the FFB Pedal plugin
  • Navigatee to Rudder tab
  • Adjust the Rudder effects parameter for your intend
  • Enable Rudder, Plugin will send the rudder config to pedal
  • The pedals will now sync wirelessly and reset to 50% of their travel as noted above
  • For 3 pedal sets, system will default Throttle + Clutch as Rudder pedal.

[!TIP] Since there is less travel for the pedals, you will also notice that they will feel "stiffer" as the force-travel curve is adjusted for the reduced range. It may feel odd at first if you are used to using the pedals for driving.

Recommended settings and limitations

Match pedal configs

It's strongly recommended to use the same config for both pedals. You can use the [Profile-Binding]Profiles feature in the plugin to match the two pedals, and switch quickly between brake / throttle and rudder configs.

Force travel curves

The Linear or Lograrithmic force-travel curve is recommmended

Control strategy

The recommended control strategy is MPC control

Rudder brake

The plugin allows you to enable rudder brake mode. This is not configured in the plugin UI so you will need to bind a key, joystick button or similar to trigger it.

When the Rudder Brake switch is triggered, a system notification will popup. The pedal position is still set to 50% travel, and pedal sync is stopped. The pedals can now move individually as a brake pedal, with 50% travel. Rudder brake joystick out is reported as Ry-left rudder and Rz-right rudder.
