I had a whole bit here about how I was writing this before implementing shardbearers, and wasn't gonna update it after. Sadly, though, the implementation is more involved than I'd anticipated, so here ya go.

The Arena

Preparation

The main way to acquire Shards here is to challenge Shardbearers, a unique mob that is equipped with Shardplate and a Shardblade. To challenge one, you must first go to the Arena, a structure that spawns in any suitably flat and non-foresty biome. Before entering the arena, make sure you have at least an enchanted chestplate. You don't have to, of course, but if you're wearing a chestplate that isn't enchanted or Shardplate and you get hit with a Blade, your eyes will burn, so yk.

First Fight

Once you are prepared, go to the block in the middle of the arena and right-click on it to challenge a Shardbearer. Your opponent will appear, and the fight will ensue.

Further Fights

To fight again in the same arena, you will need to wager your Shardblade. To do this, right-click on the block in the middle of the arena with an unbonded Shardblade with a gemstone on the hilt. The Blade will remain there until the Shardbearer is dead.
