Hecatomb is an asymmetrical game, since the player fights against programmed enemies, which do not have the same mechanics or resources. The enemies have endless bullets, whilst the player’s are limited. The enemies can not heal themselves, whilst the players can. The enemies are restricted in their movement, whilst the players can aim 360 degrees around them. The boss fight is asymmetrical as well, since the boss has much more health and deals more damage.

Difficulty

The difficulty of Hecatomb increases throughout the game. The tutorial has the easiest concept, as it has no puzzles and only one wounded melee enemy. The statues room is also only a transit room, without any combat and with a fairly simple puzzle. The complexity rises in the first Level, as there are some (still) intuitive puzzles and some full-health melee and ranged enemies. In the second Level the player right of the bat faces a mini boss. After the mini boss there are harder variations of the puzzles from the first level and the melee and ranged enemies have stronger stats. The final stage and the boss fight has no puzzles, however the combat reaches its hightest point.

Fightsystem

  • there is two bullet types planned (normal & sunberry bullet)
  • sunberry bullets are used, when the suberry is consumed (only temporary)
  • the player's only weapons are their bullets (only ranged combat)
  • enemies attack as soon as they spot the player
  • enemies need to reach a certain distance to player to attack them
  • there are melee and ranged enemies
  • the further the player advances the stronger the enemies become (their stats increase)

Version 2.0:

In the new version of the game, the puzzles have been removed due to a shift in the game's scope. The gameplay remains the same, but there is now only one bullet type, as the sunberry upgrade has been eliminated. The game's progression has also changed; instead of multiple levels, there is now only one large room for the player to explore. The player must find four doors in this large room, each leading to a Golem room where a stone golem must be slain and a ghost must be rescued.
