Inspiration

Main inspiration

The main inspiration - which was specified by the university - is the game The Legend Of Zelda: Link’s Awakening from 1993 (Nintendo). Hecatomb has some touch points with TLOZ: Link’s Awakening (1993): The puzzles should be similar (perhaps even simpler) in difficulty. TLOZ has revolutionary Puzzles and Combat, which shaped numerous clones over the time. Nowadays, thanks to that, the puzzle solving can be somewhat copied and designed very intuitively The tutorial makes the main character seem like a hero, with the dread of this herodom creeping in slowly (Link is also considered a hero) The main character has his head tip curved to remind of Link’s iconic hat Vases are the most common destroyable object After solving a puzzle and acquiring an item a jingle plays, just like in TLOZ

Other inspiration

Hecatomb’s mechanics are also inspired by the games Enter the Gungeon (Devolver Digital) and The Binding of Isaac. The setting is inspired by the game series Bioshock and Wolfenstein, as well as the children’s novel Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll and the book series Red Rising by Pierce Brown. The Art is mainly inspired by the dreamcore aesthetic.
