Eleth and the Coven - AlexisBliesener/Bewitched GitHub Wiki
To introduce the Coven and Eleth's situation to the player:
We could leave an interactable scroll in the starting area, perhaps on a fallen skeleton in the room with our player. This will have a letter/message containing details about the coven from a now deceased member, who was trying to help Eleth keep her mind in the last few days before she passed. This is written personally and in the first person and would hold information similar to the next few passages, aside from the last paragraph.
Eleth, the player character, belongs to a small coven of witches in the Kingdom of Jatte, where they practice a version of soul magic to be able to commune with their ancestors and spirits beyond the grave, for advice, guidance, and connection. However, they were eventually found by the Kingdom and arrested for heresy and witchcraft, despite their non-harmful practices.
Deep underground, in this forsaken jail cell, the coven slowly fell into madness and disease, withering away one by one. Exhaustion, starvation, and hostile environments from other prisoners were all factors in the fall of the already anemic numbers. Eleth, one of the last ones alive after months of torture, experimentation, and struggling to survive, tried to comfort her final sister as she lay dying. Kalieth lay weak in the corner cell that they had snuck into, pleading with Eleth to try and save herself.
Seeing her final coven member die snapped something in Eleth's mind, pushing her to the edge of sanity, into hatred and vengeance. She knew then that she had to use the few practices that her coven had forbid if she wanted to survive, soul possession and manipulation, to use those around her to her advantage, and make her captors and monsters around her pay for what they had done to her sisters.
In Universe message to Eleth:
Part 1:
Eleth. My sister. You must remember who you are. Anger and hate are not our ways, The Sisters of Soul. We strive for peace and advise from our ancestors, not war or destruction. We were a peaceful folk of the lands of Jatte, but the people did not see us as such. They feared out ways, called us heretics. But we know the value of our teachings, and that we are who we are.
Part 2:
Our sisters were shackled and chained, dragged into these mines for the Kingdom's purpose of mining and experimentation. We withered away, slowly fading. I worry how our ancestors have been in our absence, and I pray that they do not linger in torment in our loss. However, I know that many of our sisters have already joined them, and I will too. I only hope that we will be able to leave this place in the next life.
Part 3:
Please Ethel. Remember where you come from. Remember your sisters. Remember our teachings. I may pass soon, but you are not alone. I believe you can get out. You are the most steadfast of our order, most resilient. Get out. Leave this place, and carry on our traditions. You must.
Love, Kalieth.
