Table of Contents

Introduction

The Histogram tool uses ImageMagick to calculate a histogram analysis for the current image in the render view. There are tabs for viewing RGB, or separated luma, red, green, and blue histogram channels.

Histogram Tool Tabs

Using the Histogram Tool

To add a Histogram tab to your sidebars you can use either the Domemaster3D Menu item "Dome Histogram" (found in the Rendering menu set) or the Domemaster3D Histogram shelf tool.

Shelf Tool Let's start by clicking the Histogram shelf tool icon.

The histogram window is docked as a tab on the sidebar of Maya's user interface next to the Attribute Editor and the Channel Box. Clicking on the Histogram Tab will expand the window.

Refresh the Histogram Button

To reduce CPU usage, the histogram plot is updated manually. After you render an image in the render view you can update the histogram plot by clicking the "Refresh the Histogram" button.

Refresh the Histogram Button

When the refresh button is pressed, the histogram MEL script will save a snapshot of the image in the Maya Render View window and send it to the Domemaster3D shader's bundled version of ImageMagick. A new histogram plot is generated and the results are loaded back into the Histogram window.

The Histogram window has a dockable window interface you can drag to the left or right sidebars in the Maya user interface, or you can detach the Histogram view and put it on a separate monitor.

Floating Maya Histogram Window

Here is an example of a fulldome image in the Maya Render View and the resulting plot in the Histogram window. Since the image was taken on an overcast day there isn't a lot of contrast in the image and the histogram plot doesn't show a lot of variance.
