Player's Guide to Flan's Mod ++

This guide is intended for players of Flan's Mod ++, either as a standalone mod or as part of a modpack. All keybinds, excluding the mouse buttons for gun and grenade items, can be changed ingame.

Guns

Guns are the primary weapons of Flan's Mod. They require Ammo items to use, and take time to load/reload. Each gun may have unique behavior- ranging from powerful sniper rifles to rapid-fire SMG's to trusty pistols to devastating rocket launchers.

Guns are usually crafted from weapon boxes, though some may instead have a conventional crafting recipe. They do not come with ammo loaded- you must craft and load the ammo separately.

Use [R] or [R-Mouse] to load your gun. Use [L-Mouse] to toggle aiming down the gun's sights, and use [R-Mouse] to shoot. Aiming down the sights improves your accuracy. Note that most guns cannot be fired while sprinting; if a gun is raised or lowered while sprinting, this indicates it cannot be fired.

Most guns will either fire a single shot at a time or automatically shoot as long as [R-Mouse] is held. Some guns may fire in bursts, with a set number of shots per click. Some guns may have multiple available fire modes. Press [V] to switch between fire modes.

The action of firing a gun causes recoil, which kicks your view camera upward and sometimes sideways. The camera shifts from recoil settle after a short amount of time, but it builds up quickly with rapid-fire guns; you'll need to adjust your aim to compensate for recoil. Sneaking will reduce the accumulation of recoil.

When your gun is out of ammo, it cannot be used until it is reloaded. Use [R] to reload your gun; alternatively, using [R-Mouse] while your gun is empty will automatically reload it. There is a short delay after a gun is emptied where it cannot be reloaded using [R-Mouse], giving you time to switch to another gun and keep shooting during combat.

Attachments

Attachments add visual modifiers to your gun, in addition to altering its stats.

Attachments can be added to a gun using the Gun Modification Table. Place your Gun in the modification table, then add attachments to the appropriate slots. You can only have one type of attachment per slot type, with the available slots depending on the gun. Some guns will only support certain attachment types.

Typically, each type of attachment has a specific function, though not all attachments of one type will act the same.

  • Scopes and sights alter the zoom-in effect from aiming, with most of them increasing zoom.
  • Barrels, depending on the type, alter accuracy and sometimes recoil; suppressor/silencer barrels reduce gunfire noise.
  • Grips reduce recoil and sometimes increase accuracy, with some taking the form of bipods that only work when sneaking.
  • Stocks reduce recoil and can also increase accuracy.

Paintjobs

Guns may have alternate color schemes called Paintjobs. Paintjobs can be applied to a gun in the Gun Modification Table. Place your Gun in the modification table, then click the Paintjob you wish to apply. Most Paintjobs require dyes to apply, but some do not.

Grenades

Grenades are throwable, single-use items. Most grenades are explosive, and will damage players, mobs, and possibly the environment, depending on the grenade type. Some grenades are smoke or gas grenades, producing a cloud of smoke or debilitating gas. Some are flashbangs, stunning anyone too close to it when it goes off. And some are nothing more than non-exploding throwables that inflict damage from just hitting things.

Landmines, Claymores, and remote-detonated C4 explosives function similar to grenades, but instead detonate under different circumstances. Mines and Claymores, once primed after a few seconds, will detonate if something gets close enough to it. C4 explosives require a remote signal or another nearby explosion to set off.

Most types of grenades and similar explosives will detonate if hit by a bullet.

Vehicles

Vehicles provide fast and secure transportation across land or water. All vehicles have a least one seat for a driver, with many also having secondary seats for passengers or gunners. This makes them the perfect form of land transportation for going places with your friends.

Vehicles must be crafted at a Vehicle Crafting Table. Each vehicle requires certain parts to be crafted, such as chassis, wheels, seats, etc. Vehicles also need an Engine to be crafted, with the highest performing engine being used.

Engines provide the power necessary to drive a vehicle. The engine used determines the vehicle's fuel consumption and top speed- though each vehicle may have a different top speed with the same engine. Some engines will require a specific type of fuel, and will not load any other type. For example, a gasoline engine may be fueled with a can of gasoline, but not with a hopper filled with coal.

Some engines may be powered by Redstone Flux (RF), and are for all intents and purposes electric engines. These engines can draw power from RF-storing items, and then consume this power in place of fuel.

Using vehicles

Crafted vehicles take the form of a carriable item. They can be placed using [R-Mouse], and can be picked up again by using [L-Mouse] on the driver's seat. To enter a vehicle's seat, use [R-Mouse] on it; press [Shift] to exit a vehicle seat.

Controlling a vehicle is simple. Use [W] to accelerate, and [S] to decelerate and reverse. Use [A] and [D] to steer. Use [Space] to apply the brakes and slow down quickly. Vehicles will naturally slow down over time when [W] or [S] is not being held. Enabling Cruise Control with [J] will hold the vehicle's throttle steady and reduce throttle sensitivity, allowing for continuous driving at precise speeds.

Individual vehicles have different performance stats, including top speed, acceleration, steering, and traction. A vehicle's base top speed is influenced by its engine, while the other three stats are independent of engine type. Acceleration determines how fast the vehicle can throttle up. Steering determines how effectively the vehicle can steer. Traction determines how much the vehicle slides when turning at high throttle values.

Vehicles also have different fuel tank and cargo hold sizes. A larger fuel tank enables more fuel to be stored, thus requiring less frequent refueling and longer trips. A vehicle's cargo hold can store items and is useful for transporting several items at once over long distances. Note that some vehicles may not have any cargo slots for storing items.

To refuel a vehicle or access the cargo hold, press [R] to open the vehicle menu. The vehicle menu provides options for accessing cargo, refueling the engine, checking the vehicle's durability, and adding ammo to guns. Only the driver can access the vehicle menu.

Vehicles are not invulnerable, indestructible machines. Bullets, skeleton arrows, explosions, and falling from sufficient heights can damage parts of a vehicle- with fall damage affecting the core section. If a vehicle part takes too much damage, it'll be destroyed and drop its component items; destroyed parts can be replaced with its components in the repair menu, adding the part back with low starting durability. Parts can be repaired before being destroyed using specific repair tools, usually in the form of a blowtorch-style item.

Be careful though- if the core takes too much damage, the entire vehicle will be destroyed, often resulting in a potentially lethal explosion.

Combat Vehicles

Some vehicles- such as the Kubelwagen- come with a mountable gun. Use [R-Mouse] the seat with the gun to enter it, then move the mouse and use [L-Mouse] to aim and fire the gun. Note that guns must be loaded with ammo by the driver.

Sometimes a vehicle may have fixed guns usable by the driver, and these guns can be fired using [L-Mouse] for the primary gun or [R-Mouse] for the secondary one.

Watercraft

Though most vehicles and land-based, some are instead water-based. They can only be placed in the water and will float at the water's surface. These watercraft behave like other vehicles, just in the water instead of on land. Unlike normal Minecraft boats, these watercraft are far more durable, and it'll take more than a small sandy shore to damage them.

Some vehicles may be amphibious, enabling them to travel both on land and in water. Amphibious vehicles are extremely versatile and usually take the form of an Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) or Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV).

Planes and Helicopters

Airplanes are the core feature of Flan's Mod since its inception as Flan's Flying Mod in Minecraft's Beta releases. Airplanes provide a fast and exciting method of transportation, but are harder to use than land or water vehicles. They usually require open areas to take off and gain altitude, and will rapidly take damage from colliding with the terrain- often breaking blocks in the process. That being said, planes are almost always faster than land vehicles, and can fly over any terrain that would otherwise hinder other vehicle types.

Planes are crafted in the same manner as vehicles, and also require engines. Some engines cannot be used with planes, however, just as some engines cannot be used with vehicles. Like vehicles, planes are crafted into item form and can be placed or picked up easily.

Flying Planes

Planes have more complex control behavior than normal vehicles. [W] and [S] control the throttle, raising or lowering it respectively. Planes will not start moving until their throttle is above 25%, and usually must be throttled up to 40% before they can take off. Different planes may have different take-off speeds required.

By default, mouse-control is enabled for planes; this can be disabled by pressing [C]. Move the mouse up and down to control pitch- with moving the mouse down pitching the plane upward, and vise-versa. Moving the mouse left and right rolls the plane. [A] and [D] can be used to steer the plane left and right. [Space] and [Ctrl] can also be used to pitch the plane up and down, respectively.

The landing gear can be toggled using [L] when airborne; you'll want to deploy the landing gear before landing to avoid damaging the plane.

Planes can also have guns, be it fixed guns for the pilot or pivoting guns for passengers. These guns function identically to guns on normal vehicles.

Helicopters

Helicopters share some behavior with planes, and functionally are the same type of item and entity, but fly differently. Throttling up to at least 20% percent will activate a gradual "pull" towards 50% throttle, which results in a stable hover. Throttling up or down allows the copter to ascend or descend, respectively.

Helicopters will also move forward, backward, left, or right depending on pitch and roll. Pitching the nose down will move the copter forward while pitching the nose up will move is backward. This can be tricky to figure out sometimes, but helicopters are fairly responsive, and will quickly slow to a steady hover if you level out the copter's pitch and roll.

VTOL Aircraft

Some aircraft are VTOL-capable; they can switch between a helicopter-style hover mode and an airplane-style flight mode. These aircraft are the most versatile in the game, as they can take off from confined spaces and quickly transition to flight mode for fast transportation.
