Milestone #3: Vsphere Install

Video

💡Milestone 1 and 2 should be completed, we are going to augment our architecture further by deploying vCenter and adding our esxi host to it.

  • Overall this process was extremely simple, as such this documentation might seem a tad sparse comparatively to other entries.

Stage 1 Install

My first step was to mount the VMware-VSCA ISO to my Xubuntu box via the VM settings in ESXI:

Next, I ran the installer with the following:

# Navigate to the correct directory

 cd /media/zach/VMware VCSA/vcsa-ui-installer/lin64

# Run the installer

./ installer

  • Follow defaults

  • Deployment target should be your ESXi host IP: 192.168.7.XX on port 443 using your prior set User/Pass.

  • Configure / Setup the vCenter Server VM. VM should be named "vcenter" and use the root password you've been using (unless you'd like change it, but remember to write it down)

  • Select your datastore for storage. I'd suggest using the larger of your options, however I only have one.

  • For networking, I used 10.0.17.3 as my IP, 17.2 as my default gateway, and 17.4 for DNS. As per usual, prefix is 24.

After this, the first stage of the install is complete.

Stage 2 Install:

  • Synch time with NTP servers. NTP server should be "pool.ntp.org", making sure SSH is set to "Deactivated"

  • SSO Domain name: vsphere.local, keep defaults (minus your password of course)

  • Uncheck CEIP box (we do not like analytics getting exported from our secure environment)

  • Finish install.

GUI steps

Login to your gui:

In the menu, right click and select "New Data Center"

  • IP should be your ESXi host

  • Use your root login

  • Press "Review and Finish"

  • If you've followed these steps correctly, your VM's should be visible after a couple minutes (if not instantly)
