Backpacks are one of the most useful items you could craft. They allow you to carry more stuff, but also come with very handy convenience upgrades:

• Size upgrades, increase the size of the backpack
• Auto pickup upgrades, allows the backpack to automatically pickup certain types of items, like gems, runes etc
• Auto salvage, automatically salvages low rarity items that you most likely find useless

If you want to stop the auto pickup feature, you have to hold the backpack in your main hand.

The backpack upgrades are crafted in the Blacksmithing station and require blacksmithing profession levels.
