Trivia
The Iron Apple was designed as the 'opposite' of the standard Golden Apple. A Golden Apple provides regeneration and replenishes 4 (
) hunger, so the Iron Apple instead regenerates hunger and replenishes 4 () health. The enchanted Golden Apple gives a stronger regeneration and decreases damage taken, so the enchanted Iron Apple provides a strong Metabolism effect as well as causing exhaustion to increase at a slower rate - effectively reducing the rate at which hunger decreases.
When the Exhausting items were introduced in 1.8, they affected the weights of generated Iron Apples in loot chests. The Desert Pyramid, End City, Jungle Temple, Nether Fortress and the Simple Dungeon loot tables were affected. This means getting Iron Apples are more likely in versions before 1.8
